    Icy Dock Single 5.25" Caddy

    Hi,

Need some help before buying the wrong item!

I've got plenty of spare hard drives (sata II), and want to use them for backup in my HP ML110 G5 server, via spare 5.25" bay (there is only 1 free bay).

There seems to be both trayless and tray solutions, if I go with trayless do you sell something I can use to put the ejected 3.5" HDD in (which then can go in a firesafe) to keep it safe in transit and storage?

If a tray solution, do the trays provide any measure of protection?

Some of the icy docks appear to be a solution where you fit the HDD into an enclosure and then slide it into the 5.25" frame - if so can you buy just the spare enclosures?

    Thanks.

If you mean the blue eye one, I often wondered about spare trays, couldnt find any and only needed a couple so just bought multiple complete units (they were quite a bit cheaper back then so wouldnt have given much difference).

They are aluminium inners with covers. The disk is screwed in at the base and very protected. (dropping the whole thing from high up would probably kill it just as well though).

I did see some hard drive storage rack I cant remember where or who though, if i remember I will post it for you.
Other than that the samsung drives usually come in clams which can be re used.
Low tech solution is back in the anti static bag and re use some bubble wrap. Stacks up nicely and stops damage from minor knocks. You could put then put them in one of the alu cd/dvd cases if you wanted it a bit more presentable.

Re: Icy Dock Single 5.25" Caddy

Well after much reading looks like:-
    - LN28450 ICY DOCK MB876SK-B 3.5" SATA Hot-Swap Aluminum Mobile Rack HDD Enclosure- drive tray interchangeable

    - however many I want of LN26298 Icy Dock Black Carrier (HDD tray) for IcyDock MB453/MB454/MB455 Models

But the next question is my ML110 G5 doesn't apparently support "hot-swap/plug" of drives, from the scant info. I can find looks like I'll need to buy a PCI card to provide this, would I be correct in thinking that:-

    LN23514 Lycom ST-125 Raid5 SATA II 4Ports (1External eSATA + 3 Internal) inc Dual PCI Brackets
would give me SATA hot swap feature?

Re: Icy Dock Single 5.25" Caddy

If its a straight thru 'dumb' plug then it would depend on your mobo supporting AHCI for SATA hotswapping.
If there's any electronics in the caddy then possibly it could prevent that tho?

Icy Box IB-AC602 3.5" Hard drive protection box (Anti-Shock, Dust free, Stackable)
    LN27570

    That would do for storage?

Re: Icy Dock Single 5.25" Caddy

After sending of a few emails have gone for that Lycom ST-125 card and the Icy Dock MB877IK-B 5.25" - Lycom provided a link to http://mt-naka.com/hotswap/index_enu.htm for a utility to enable hot swapping.

rabbid: thanks for your help, I like the look of those LN27570 cases, I'll grab some come next pay day.

    welcome mate

potentially useful utility there too, i'll grab that one!
be nice when they release a pci-e version of that sata card, otherwise its gonna hammer the old pci bus if your doing a lot of file copy or move, and/or hang many drive off one card.

Indeed it does hammer it, however for £50 I've ended up with a simple way to backup home server data reusing old hard drives - whilst I wouldn't recommend it for a production environment it's perfect for me.
