replacement dvd drive for hp slimline S5000

    hi

i need a dvd drive to replace a broken one in this slimline machine. easy i know, but i need a drive with the little connector that enables a eject button on the case front - a small cable - that plugs in the back of the dvd drive next to the sata ports.

    what one should i get?

Can you please post the part numbers on the actual drive, as well as the exact model number of the computer.

I have not seen a SATA DVDRW drive with that kind of connector before.

link to the HP Service manual for the HP Pavilion Slimline s5210uk (see page 15)

Having checked the Sony/NEC/LG/Samsung made drives I have in the workshop, I can confirm that none of them have the #1 connector shown in the picture above.
I have also had a quick look on ebay for HP made optical drives and while most don't show a pic of the rear, the one that did however did not have the connector.

Acording to the HP PartSurfer website your need replacement part KY818-69001 "16x DVD+/- R/RW SATA SMD dual layer optical drive - With LightScribe and external eject feature".

Unless Scan say otherwise it will likely be far cheaper to just buy a generic drive and loose the functionality of the eject button on the front of the computer. You can eject the drive in Windows by right-clicking onto it in "My Computer" and selecting the eject option in the small menu that pops-up.

    Hope this helps.

Re: replacement dvd drive for hp slimline S5000

I've never hardly seen that little connection apart from in systems like HP ones and the majority of drives we have only have the SATA power and data connections.

    As a workaround for a cheap solution have you thought of using an external DVD writer that is USB based like the following ;

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/samsu...usrw-x8-rw-x6-

As you can see, its not that much more than the internal drives

    Best Regards,

Re: replacement dvd drive for hp slimline S5000

If you weren't in the UK (or I wasn't in Germany for that matter), I'd modify a regular DVD-RW drive for you.
Basically all one would need to do is solder 2 wires to the eject button at the front of a regular drive and route them through the drive and out the back somehow.
Shipping would probably kill this idea though.

Do you know any relatives, colleagues etc. who are handy with a soldering iron.. ?
