    Cache Drive playing up, should I return?

    Hi, I was noticing a some lockups and iffy behavior since running my corsair accelerator and today I got a message from nvelo saying it was stopping:
    this is the status

    *****************************************************************
    * *
    * Dataplex *
    * version 1.1.3.3 *
    * *
    * Installed 05/07/2012 *
    *****************************************************************

    Status = Disabled (Temporary cache drive failures) !!!
    Target Drive = ST3500418AS ATA Device (465.7 GB)
    Disk #0, C: E: (Boot)
    Cache Drive = Corsair Accelerator SSD ATA Device (41.93 GB)

    NOTE: To re-ENABLE Dataplex, please reboot.

    C:\Program Files\Dataplex\CacheFilter>

    Let me know if you need any more details.

    Edit, on reboot it started up fine but I have uninstalled nvelo to prevent any data loss issues
    Thanks, Oliver

    Re: Cache Drive playing up, should I return?

    I think the best way forward with this is uninstall Dataplex while connected to the web so that you can revoke your licence key, restart the pc and run disk check then download 1.1.3.3 again, in case of corruption with your installer and re-install then start again. It might also be worth checking you have the latest firmware on the SSD as well as the latest version of dataplex.

    I'm running version 1.1.2.5 on my Synapse, I read on the OCZ forum that people who had been running their drives flawlessly using 1.1.2.5 were starting to get issues with 1.1.3.1 and 1.1.3.3 so I have decided to wait for the time being on what seems to be a more stable version, but I'm not sure if you can get a previous version of the software now.

    Re: Cache Drive playing up, should I return?

    I have uninstalled and looked like it revoked the licence. disk check looks ok too. Could well be the software playing up thinking about it, I wasn't getting any BSODS or shut downs system became unresponsive for a while then seemed to eventually sort it self out. I don't remember what version corsair downloaded but it probably was that, could try re installing it at the weekend when i have a little time.

    Error keeps coming back, should I submit a return?

    Yep, even after a fresh OS install, which was done for other reasons. It was going fine for a while then came back with the error. I could reinstall again but seems just eventually comes back.

    actually just checked the corsair website and there's an updated version of dataplex so going to give that a try for a few days and see how it goes

    You haven't stated what hardware you're running, can you give us some system specs, not sure if it will help but it might.

    If it is buggy return it - don't put too much faith in companies and become and indirect beta tester for them.

    He and I are both running the same software, ie Dataplex, but we are not both getting issues with it or the drives that we are running and there's a new(er) version of the software released every month or so (the current versions 1.1.3.7 was released on 11th May), so not sure if that constitutes being a beta tester or if that indicates good levels of customer support through a continuous feedback and update cycle, however if it is the former then I think that everyone on Hexus has become a beta tester simply by installing a graphics card that has monthly updates released for it, and while most users are able to run their GPUs with no issues there are always some 'beta testers' that have issues.

    Just like the people who had issues with the SandForce drives for months?? Sorry,but putting up with the issues is just not productive at all. Why?? It means instead of releasing well tested products,companies will release products which have bugs if they know people are putting up with them. These companies are only here to take your money - don't think they really are your friends.

    "lockups and iffy behavior"

    If my brand new graphics card had those issues and it was the card,it would be going back,as would a cache drive or SSD. In fact,the last two would definitely mean they would be returned,as it makes the PC unusable. At least with a graphics cards,you can use an old one and re-install the drivers. This is as opposed to a cache drive or SSD where downtime or bugs can affect your ability to actually even use your PC for basic tasks.

    I have been on this website a few years myself - so I do have at least "some" knowledge of hardware!

    I'm not disputing this, I just don't agree with your conclusion, that the technology is either flawed or unfinished. I have been using a cache drive since February and I have not had any major issues the only minor issues I have had has been to do with Windows Updates after a fresh install I did about about two weeks ago, which I resolved by uninstalling Dataplex, updating Windows, secure erasing the SSD and then reinstalling Dataplex which not only fixed the issue it then led to startup times that were 10 seconds faster then they were before the issue.

    Without knowing anything about the hardware that Krazy_olie is using we can't rule out the possibility that there might be another reason why the drive doesn't work on his rig, for instance if he was running a P5 chipset as this doesn't have an official BIOS with support for SSD drives so people with these need to use a modded BIOS to get this function added to their PCs.

    Using a rather old 965 chipset so yeh ssds not officially supported that I know of, although considering corsair didn't mention anything about old motherboards in the spec for the product so didn't consider it as an issue . Having said all that after updating the software as well disabling sleep and trying a few different drive ports it's been solid. The new software was more stable expect I noticed on booting from sleep it kept failing so disabled it. Now proving to be a nice nippy addition to the system.

    I would have returned it immediately if I was getting things which looked like genuine hardware failures, BSODS etc but I got the impression that it just wasn't playing nice. Cat is right though stuff that is known to be buggy shouldn't really be released or at least it should be stated that certain things are not recommended if bugs are known. Fortunately in this case I didn't mind trying some different things first but if I was setting this up in a professional setting it would have been returned very quickly.

    If its failing I would advise on getting an RMA raised for this so it can be checked and then replaced if need be.

    I personally wouldn't wait for the next one to happen, I'd request an RMA with the information you've already provided and get it swapped ASAP.
