    4GB EVGA GTX 970 SC - Faulty?

    Hi SCAN,

I bought a 4GB EVGA GTX 970 SC back in June, however it now appears to have developed a fault.

Machine was running fine yesterday, then suddenly last night the the PC black screened, took a look and the fans on the GPU appeared to have stopped spinning, rebooted the machine and although it displayed fine, the fans were still not spinning.

Came back to the PC and booted it this morning, the fans spun for about 5 - 10 seconds then stopped spinning. I swapped the GPU out for my old 260 and this is working fine.

I have no other GPU to test with that matches the power of the 970 but everything else appears to be working fine.

Is this a common / known fault or is there a known solution to the problem?

Want to check everything I can before I RMA.

Edit! I've just read a some other forums and they all seem to say the fans dont turn on until 60 degree's?

    Thanks,

I had one of those, the fans don't spin unless its under load. Should say that on a piece of paper thats in the box amongst the other bits you get. Or something along those lines. Its a power saving feature. There PSU's don't run the fan either until it gets to a certain temp.

Edit : If you load and start playing a game, you will see the fans start up.

    Cheers for the reply.

I had never noticed the fans not spinning before which had me worried, has been fine since and ive used the EVGA Precision X software so the fans start at a low speed..just for peace of mind

    Further to jonj's post

It's a new feature from Nvidia cards, it's meant to reduce system noise. Thanks to the incredibly energy-efficient nature of the Maxwell chipset the card doesn't need active cooling when not under load. This includes during games like League of Legends and Heathstone.

thats the reason my mate bought one of these to reduce noise because they don't spin on lower loads
