Intel e6300 overheating?

Hello,

I have recently purchased some equipment from yourselves - to build the following system:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3
Graphics Card: PowerColor Radeon X1950 XT
PSU: Hiper 580W
RAM: 2GB OCZ 6400
HDD: 250 GB Western Digital

Unfortunately, when idling in windows the CPU is idling at 76 degrees celcius, and rising.

I have followed the instructions on mounting my heatsink - to the letter. Growing concerned, I consulted with a professional computer technician. I was informed that there was absolutely nothing wrong with my installation of the heatsink and CPU (Being overcautious, this was reseated as well). The technician advised me that perhaps the CPU its self is faulty or defective.

I am posting here to confirm if this is your thoughts also, and whether the CPU should be RMA'd with yourselves? My order number is available upon request (pm or email).

You never mentioned thermal paste in your post... I know its silly but you did put some on the processor didnt you?

Yes sorry, initially the paste that was on the heatsink initially (Intel retail), then tried both AS3 and AS5.

Heh, just checking the obvious.

What is it your using to read the temps? I know sometimes programs can get it wrong, I know with my board it used to display the wrong temps sometimes, but a bios update managed to sort that out for me.

An excellent point. Good question. I had overlooked this, I suspect that my motherboard needs a bios upgrade, let me check this issue.

I have that motherboard (with a revision F7 BIOS) and processor and my max temp (measured with SpeedFan) so far has been less than 30degC.

I used a small amount of Arctic Silver 5 when mounting my Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro HSF.

Your temp sound dangerously high!

put your hand on the heatsink while the PC is running, does it burn you or just feel warm ?

if it feels warm, just over body temp and you can hold your hand on it without discomfort, then the diode is reading wrong, or the BIOS is reading the info wrong.

if you cant hold onto it for more than 5-10 seconds without it burning you, its reading right and must be a faulty chip.

Not putting thermal paste on the HS will not cause idle temps of 80c. Try the following:

Reseating your HS

Flashing the bios to F7 (try this first as the F8+ bios versions have a reboot cycle issue)
Reset your CMOS.

Also try what Gonzo suggests as this is probably a fool proof way to check.

I have reset the the HS over 10 times now.

I have just flashed to F10, still getting the same issue. Shall I goto 7? I suspect this board is revision1 as I don't see marking otherwise.

The processor still seams to be defaulting to a multiplier of 6, no idea why this is.

Thank-you, this has been completed and I have an RMA confirmation. Unfortunately I think we are talking the middle to end of next week until I have a working chip though. Is there a way to accelerate this RMA process?

I think because its Friday afternoon it'll be abit difficult to sort anything out before next week. I just ordered some bits and it says a delivery date for next Wednesday, thats what I expected though.

In regards to speeding this process up, unfortunately we cannot send out advance replacements for processors and as such this timescales going to obviously include the time taken for the CPU to come back to us - be tested and then obviously replaced if faulty.

Did you try as Gonzo suggested and just touch the heatsink while the system is running?

It may be that it is throttling at such a temp if it really is overheating which is why the multiplier has dropped to 6x ?
