    Re: Tracking SSD costs

    Intel G2 @ Scan:
    80GB: £163.09 (-£18.80)
    160GB: £349.16 (No change)

Crucial C300 @ Crucial (price does not include cashback which would make it better than Scan):
    64GB: £115.14 (-£3.52)
    128GB: £230.29 (-£65.79)
256GB: £500.54 (-£0.26); Note that cashback would knock £35 off.

Yeah, at this rate, the Crucial might become the first non-JMicron to break the £1.50 barrier. But that's assuming there is no reversal to the trend as we've seen in the past. Not sure if there is any reason for Intel's release to cut price significantly though.

    Re: Tracking SSD costs

it's mainly because Intel plan to make double the capacity of their drives for around the same cost as they did last time, so a 320GB drive is well known to be coming in at probably £350 mark, etc.

    Let's hope it does.

You can also buy a 60gb Corsair Reactor which does 250 Mbps reads and 110 Mpbs writes for under £99.

    Re: Tracking SSD costs

Yeah, I have always disputed people who say that SSD will replace mechanical drive in '2-3 years' (claims I've heard over a year ago). I am sure price will fall, but going by the last 6 months since I started this thread, it'll take a while before they are really viable for me. And as for replacing mechanical drives, not in a long long time. Having said that, I don't recall that the Intel G2 has ever costed as little as £130. Well, from other e-tailers or as a promotion for a very short period, but the pre-order from Scan was just over £170 too going by my post at the start of September.

    Re: Tracking SSD costs

Oh well, maybe its just a stock thing and in a month they'll be 10-20% cheaper otherwise they are seemingly selling almost the same drives with same specs under different names for the same price?

    Re: Tracking SSD costs

the mark ups are big on SSD`s at this point in time maybe next year some price drops with new tech coming on line but price drops will only be small.

Kingston 96Gb for £105? Seems the best bet at the moment - on Ebuyer.

Yeah, the Kingstons are great, I prefer them over Sandforce based SSDs.

    Re: Tracking SSD costs

Made a post around January 2009 with some prices of Corsair and OCZ stuff if anyone is curious about how much it's changed.

^ Also in same post, wondering if PCI-E SSDs will overtake SATA? Still wondering on that, really. Anything much changed?

    Back to prices:

~January 2010, 160GB Intel 2.5" MLC Gen.2 SATA SSD was £293.56 (I only know this thanks to saving the prices from before on my system)
Full Intel product ID, since sometimes they have the same name but are different versions (this drive, the G2, was called the X-25M (at 34nm), but the old G1 was ALSO called the X-25M (at 50nm), they didn't bother to update the marketing name for the G2 for some bizarre reason:
    SSDSA2M160G2GC

    The new one,
May 2011, 160GB Intel 2.5" MLC 320 Series SATA SSD is £224.59 on Scan atm
Full Intel product ID, since sometimes they have the same name but are different versions:
    SSDSA2CW160G310
More info on the new 320 series/G3 (again, 2 separate names is not really helping people I think!) here:
    anandtech.com/show/4244/intel-ssd-320-review, 28th March 2011

Also, this stuff I posted here might be still relevant for anyone still looking into disks, earlier on this thread on page 3, about 2 years ago now(!) I did a lot of research into real-world speed comparisons between disks too, e.g. input/outputs per second (IOPS) rather than the misleading speeds many sites give (even SCAN are guilty of this) which is based on one very large, artificial test file. It's a bit like how nVidia rig 3D benchmarks by using Heaven over more generic benchmarks, since many SSDs have good large file performance, but TERRIBLE RANDOM write speed between small files (4kb/s IOPS performance is the true benchmark of a good SSD) which is what matters for the majority of system use such as bootup, programs, games, anything really. Most things do not rely on HUGE files to run, they are made up of lots of smaller files. Ignore the flashy big numbers and google on review sites to find benchmarks of which disks have the best IOPs for 4kb/s (RANDOM write speed) if you want your real-world performance of your system to be faster (large files are more suited to being stored on traditional drives unless you edit inside large files (e.g. video editing) a lot).

That said, *DO GET AN SSD*, don't take random forum person's word for it, take this from 2009 even(!) by Anand Lal Shimpi of AnandTech:
I still firmly believe that an SSD is the single best performance improvement you can buy for your system today. Would I recommend waiting until next year to buy? This is one of the rare cases where I'd have to answer no. I made the switch last year and I wouldn't go back, it really does change the way your PC behaves.
