Best place to buy ethernet cables?

I'm just looking to get some pre-made ethernet cables, maybe 4 or 5 in various lengths just to use as spares, but some of the prices I've seen quoted on the web seem ridiculous.

Any recommendations?

For small patch cables I use http://www.kenable.co.uk/index.php/cPath/22_122_49

For anything else I make my own.

it depends on the length. if you stick to standard sizes, getting just a bit bigger if necessary, you can get them cheap from scan. it usually works out better to add some cables to your order when you buy something else

amazon marketplace is usually pretty cheap too for all sorts of cables

if you need REALLY long cables then buying a roll of cable and the crimp tool and ends might work out cheaper

I tend to point peiople to ebay, a lot of sellers now include the postage costs in the sale price, or list multi item discounts. I diy my own cables after scavenging a few half spools from a skip

Unless you are in a hurry, just add a few from Scan on your next order and bulk it up to over £25

Yeah that's precisely the problem... I need to wire up a projector for Tuesday and it turns out that the previous guy used mostly his own cables for ad-hoc work, leaving me with a 1.5m cable and nothing else.

I think I probably need a couple of 25m and some shorter ones, I was just shocked at how much some places seemed to be charging for them. I'll try Scan.

Just for my interest, are there any guides as how to make you own? And what kinda tools are needed? And how about the cost? Is it a lot cheaper than pre-mades, or is the effort needed not worth it?

It all depends on how many you are making.

I don't think it's worth it, they are a pain to put together and at least if you buy them pre made you know they are going to work and be wired right.

To make your own you will need cable, connectors, boots (optional) a ratchet RJ-45 crimper and a continuity tester.

I guess there would be hundreds of guides to making them, shouldn't be difficult to search for.

Yeh just checking prices on scan

£5 for the cripping tool, £5 for 100 connectors, £10 for a tester, and around £14 for 50m of cable.

Where as I can get 10m cables for under £2.5 lol

£5 is insanely cheap for a crimping tool, but it is a very basic one.

No idea what kind of results you would get.

Last place I bought a few cables from locally and reasonably priced was B&Q

Selection of colours and lengths going from 3ft upwards iirc.

Thanks for the link, I've gone with them in the end. Never heard of them before, but their eBay business has over 230,000 feedback... crazy! They were about half the price of dabs and so on, well worth the punt when they're only going to be used occasionally.
