To get this price i used the student discount function by typing in dell student discount into google and using that window. I think it's around 6% off.

call dell up? get a vostro? push the price down with them on the phone. Keep telling them you can't afford to spend so much - they usually budge. Maybe you have a friend who ordered with them recently, quote their order number.

I don't know anyone who ordered with them recently.
As far as ringing up goes i think they wouldn't give me anymore discount after the student discount.

People always seem to be saying they got free upgrades/£100 or so off their laptops by phoning up. I didn't do it, because I wasn't aware, but I would try it - I suspect that you can do better than 6%.

Consider going through topcashback.co.uk if you can do it in addition to the student discount for extra cashback.

ring up dell, trust me they will give you a discount, just say you say a hp laptop with a similar spec for £649 but would get the dell if they matched it there and then, they want their commission lol

but you'll miss out quidco though

Re: Can you beat this laptop for price??

i was looking for a similar spec laptop too, i found this:

    http://www.meshcomputers.com/Default...GE&USG=PRODUCT

    MESH Edge 15.6 - B2120002
Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 Dual Core Processor (2.53GHz, 3MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
    Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium - 64-bit
15.6" HD WXGA LED Display (1366x768)
512MB ATi Mobility Radeon HD4650 Graphics
    3GB DDR3 1066MHz Memory (1x1GB + 1x2GB)
    320GB Serial ATA 5400RPM 2.5" Hard Drive
DVD Super Format Dual Layer DVD Re-Writer

Mesh make decent desktops but I have not heard much about their laptops
but for extra 15 quid you can get 4gb ddr3

but other than that I think the dell one you spec'd is pretty gud for that price

Re: Can you beat this laptop for price??

I rang them, they said they are going to ring me back in the next 15-20mins but said they should be able to do me a deal.

To be fair i hope i get more than the 6% student discount cause it isn't really a lot compared to what Apple offers. Then again i suppose Apple laptops are overpriced to begin with.

Re: Can you beat this laptop for price??

For Circa £700 the Samsung R720 (think you can get it around £725 or so) hsa a 1600x900 17" led screen, bluray drive, same cpu, decent everything else.

Currently looking into getting one myself, or an Acer with a 18.4" led screen 1920x1200, only a T6500 but is up at around £840. The cheaper R720 has no bluray, worse CPU(though you could probably buy a cheapo upgrade in a year and install yourself fairly easily) but is £550ish with a really good screen.

Obviously it depends, if you want something as light as possible or small then those aren't great options, however if its more about power and you'd prefer a better screen, the samsungs are pretty decent options.

Right, well, they are ring me back again.

I found a "Samsung R720 17.3 Inch Notebook PC ( PDC T4300, 2.1GHz 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, DVDRW, LED, HD, Vista Home Premium) -Black" for £619.99 on amazon.

I then said that i would go for that, above the one i want on Dell if they didn't drop the price a bit cause the said laptop above has a bigger screen anyway.

Haha, i've heard they aren't too bad these days.

She said she couldn't do it for the amount i was looking to pay (£660) so she said she was going to wait until the prices refresh tomorrow and call me back and see what she can do.

I was in a hurry to buy it tonight though as one of the offers was like £267 off or something. Hope more offers come in to replace the old ones.

Tell her the spec of the dell and the price as it's arguably better spec for less

Mind I was hitting a brick wall with them for a while, gave up and bought my laptop from Aldi in the end for £500 (lower CPU but otherwise better/similar spec to the Dell you were looking at)

Have you looked at the Dell outlet and mcscom?
