garbage in != garbage out (56k unfriendly)

it was suggested in later parts of this thread that i could produce a DVD rip of superior quality than the DVD itself. people doubted. So, compare:

DVD original. Note the horrid subtitles

XviD. Note the sexy subtitles, and lack of wasteful black borders

OK, so it takes bloody ages, and the circumstances under which it's neccessary are rare, but admit it, the rip looks better than the source material!

hm, perhaps. but really, you'd be surprised - for example, a 640xNNN rip scales to full screen far better than a 720xNNN DVD on a 1280x1024 display. Plus, decreasing the resolution is a fantastic way to save on video bandwidth

I'll give it to him, purely for the great movie chosen to illustrate the point!

how about a resize of the DVD pic to show that it's not just the smaller size that makes it better?

    DVD (resized via bicubic filtering):

Rip (resized via Lanczos3 filtering during rip process):

Im not doubting you, I am aware of the way u can improve subs...my only argument is the fact that is isnt possible to improve the audio of video to a standard higher than the master as ripping involves compressing the master files. The subs came out nice...how long did it take exactly?

too long . am porting the subtitle OCR tool I use to Linux, which should speed things up - but it's slow going

More seriously, it takes about 15 minutes to extract the VOBs to disk for processing, 10-15 minutes to prepare the main video stream (including configuring which video filters to use, and which video codec settings to use), and maybe half an hour to an hour to do the OCR on the subtitles and spellcheck/proofread. Finally, it takes about n * 3 minutes of processing time to do the rip, with n as the length of the film in minutes.

Well - i cant see any difference in the picture itself apart from the subtitles. Do subtitles really matter that much? :|

    depends what you're watching.

subtitles, without exception, are better than dubs.

i think everyone in france who got the cringe-worthy dubs of, say, Men In Black ("Nous habillons tous en nour. Nou sommes, Les Men In Black") would agree.

and if you're watching foreign films, then nicer more readable subs is only a good thing!

sorry but I think the first picture's better, the colours are much brighter and sharper. I agree the subtitles have improved a lot but most films I watch don't use subtitles.

They (subs) do tend to look better without borders....the problem comes when you get a nice light background running behind it and cant see them easily...so the borders there as a tradeoff really, to ensure consistent readability throughout.

muh, i call foul on this one.

the quality of the subs and the precence of the black borders is due to your player, NOT the quality of the a/v stream.

you can't possibly improve on the a/v by using a lossy codec. it can't be done (by definition!).

no, they're not. a dvd video has a set resolution, which can either be displayed full-frame or squashed to 16:9 (1.777:1). If a film is in a tighter aspect ratio (1.85:1 is very common, as is 2.4:1) then black borders are physically burnt into the MPEG video stream. These can be removed when ripping, but they are part of the source material, whether you want them there or not. It is also very common in most DVDs produced with poor production values to have 4-12 pixels of blank space around the video, in all directions. The only material I've used WITHOUT these borders are those made with some love & care - season 3 of Family Guy, all of Babylon 5, Invader Zim. big studio feature films tend to have a few pixels' border, regardless of aspect ratio.

dvd subtitles, additionally, are a video stream which is overlaid on the main video. they are not stored as text, they are a series of bitmaps. you are bound to the quality of these bitmaps, and they will appear identical on any DVD player you use - this makes it easier for studios to release foreign character set subs (e.g. Arabic) without requiring player support for different fonts. if the subtitle video stream is of a low quality, then the subtitle video stream is of a low quality - putting it in another player won't fix that. when i do rips, i run the bitmapped subtitles through an optical character recognition app, giving me a plain .txt version of the subs, which i can then burn in using the font of my choice - and the associated higher quality that comes with doing the job myself rather than relying on the blocky output that a lazy studio uses to save space.
