Thermalright HR-01 versus Scythe Ninja plus Rev B

I now have a shortlist of 2 for my new cooler to be fitted on my E6600 in a Antec TX1050 case.

Does anyone know any comparative tests?

I am planning on running the Scythe passively if possible or the Thermalright using the 120 duct to the exhaust ie no fan on heatsink....

What's the verdict?

depends what you are using the computer for.

If its just genral work every now and then one would work fine passively but it would still be better to put a fan on. if the noise botheres u get a fan controller and just crank it up whern u need the extra cooling

It will be at the heart of a home recording studio.
It may regularly suffer heavy CPU loads. My current P4 640 3.2 cannot cope with the loads I'm throwing at it. I want it to be as quiet as possible though as I find fan whirring extremely distracting in the studio.

they are amazingly quiet and as i said before if you get a controller and only have it cranked up when the CPU is under serious load u should be ok. Do go for the 2000rpm one though as the 1000 is just worthless...

for the amount of air they shift they are quiet.... but yeah that fan u put seems like a better option anyway i might even get some of them myself . You will probs hit some high temps under stress but you should be ok.

What about the ultra 120, as from what I read about the HR-01 it is very top heavy and if put into a standard midi upright case you can actually see the HSF's eagerness to go to ground

Dont overlook coolers such as the arctic cooler 7 & big typhoon. Not very loud at all and have very good performance.

Looking at the review Biscuit posted it states that those HS's aren't compatible with Intel socket 775's, unless support has been added recently.

No, no no!
Don't get a SilenX! Their product specs are pure and simple lies. The 14db model they do is more like 28db. Awful. Got one in my HTPC now that was retired from my main rig, and even on a Zalman fan-mate it's not silent. I'm putting a Sharkoon 1000 in there as soon as I can bothered.

The Sharkoon 2000 is a little loud going by the specs (strange, as the 2000 80mm is silent in my case). I've got a Sharkoon 1000 120mm on my Scythe Infinity, and it too is silent. I've kitted my rig with 4 80mm 2000s, 1 120mm 1000, and a Seasonic PSU in the back. Seasonic are famously quiet (pre the M12 range anyway, where they've added a 40mm fan alongside the main one), and my 650w S12 is easily the loudest fan in my case now. The 120mm 1000 is easily enough for any of the high-end coolers, so long as you've half decent air flow through the case. I've got my C2D running at 3.3GHz (never tested higher, don't see the point) and the temperature still doesn't exceed 56c at full load on both cores.

Noiseblockers are apparently decent, as are Nexus (Yate Loons, but retail-oriented), but I'm delighted with my Sharkoons.

Can't comment on the latter, but the Arctic Coolings aren't silent at all. They're good, especially considering the price, but they're not in the same category as one of these high-end models.

I didnt say they were silent
i believe the big typhoon is about 15db, iv got one on and it keeps my opty at about 35-38 idle after being left on for a substantial number of days. It was a bit of a pain to fit though.

I was originally going to order a HR-01 but I wanted the bolt through kit that Thermalright also provide (more of a secure fitting to motherboard) and the place I was ordering from took months to get it in.

It certainly looks like a good cooler, with the duct fitted you can even take off some more degrees. Its suited for a non-overclocker as its passive so I would go for it if you were wanting something that was quiet rather than hi-performance cooler for overclocking.

Have a look at the Noctua NH-U12F, I would recommend that I ended up purchasing it and very happy with it. If you check websites, magazines etc they are all excellent reviews of this cooler.

I'm currently idling @ stock on a E6600 @ 32C and thats at low speeds. I can't even hear the fan its wisper quiet. It really is a great cooler. Go for it!!

The Scythe Ninja comes with a fan. The old original one did not. They changed the name to Ninja Plus and stuck on a fan too (Scythe 1200rpm 120mm - quite a good one).

Laterly they brought out the rev B to make it compatible with AM2 and (I believe) Core2Duo. Can't see why the old S775 wasn't compatible myself, so this might be wrong.

Anyway, most reviews are for the old Rev A. Unfortunately Scythe made a donkey's ass of the fitting clip on the Rev B and results have been very mixed with it.

Is this mounted with bolts or push clips, thought of getting the Ninja but the current version seems to have push clips and for a heavy cooler would much rather have bolts with a backplate.
