    First Car (for a 17 y.o.)

ok, im 17 in may and i'm planing to get a car, my mum/dad sayed they'd buy me one

but what would be a good buy?

they sayed thay might get a beat-up Golf/polo, but my uncal sayed (to them) that they would be better getting a "jap thing" like the almera (nissan) or a toyata

    - but what would be best? (for a price), seeing as that dont seem to taken the hint that i like my dads "W" reg 306 (D blue, 2.0 petrol meridian)

what sort of price? im guessing about a grand?

insurance is gonna be a killer so get something small with a small engine - that way it'll still be nippy. maybe a ka (do they go that low yet?) or a 106 or something. polo would seem like a good choice - maybe a volvo 340

Just get any old car for your first car until you can afford the insurance on something a bit better..? A Nova or something that doesn't cost a lot will be fine for a beginner. Just don't go sticking spoilers and 19" alloys on it

i'd *guess* that a nova for a young driver would have higher insurance than most due to their use as boy-racemobiles. not sure how reliable they are.. festers arn't particularly good for high milage/age - from whats happened to my mates they generally seem to die after about 100k/10 years.

I think 17 year olds (heck anyone under 21!) shouldn't be able to legally drive anything bigger than a 1.2 or something like that. The amount of twatty 'boy-racers' there are about is stupid. These idiots are (as usual) ruining it for everyone else and making our insurances a living hell! I was quoted £1800 third party fire and theft for a D-reg 1.0 litre heap'o'junk that's worth about 50p! F***ing ridiculous!

I'm just glad I can get cheaper(ish) insurance at the end of this year when I'm 25.

    Sorry for the rant...

Get a cheap little run around that's not gonna kill you with inexperience and that also won't bleed you (or your parents) dry with insuarance premiums. Wait till you get at least 3 years no claims before getting anything with a little power. And ignore any of your friends who take the mick. Just save up with the money you saved from insurance and get something decent in a few years and then take the mick out of them for being in so much debt with their fancy little Corsa's and Nova's.

My insurance cost me a tenth of the value of the car - not bad considering I was 18

Another vote for the clio here!

You'd be surprised how cheap the insurance can be on one of these. I had one of them, and it was cheaper to insure for me than an old fiesta 1.1! Just shop around.
