    8800gts a big improvement from 7800gt?

am looking to upgrade current gpu so i can play some upcoming games like cod4, etqw, ut3 and gears of war with eye candy turned on :-)

was wondering whether moving from a 7800gt to a 8800gts would make a huge difference. my current system specs are :

    Asus A8N-SLI
    AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200 skt 939
    2gb 3200 ram
    7800gt

Really depends what resolution you run at.

i would be tempted to use the money to beef up other parts of your system and go for a C2D with some DDR2 RAM i went from a AMD 64 with my 7800GTX to a C2D e6600 with the same card and there was quite a performance boost

Firstly an 8800GTS would be an ENORMOUS improvement on a 7800GT.
Unfortunately, a 8800GTS would be badly bottelnecked by the rest of your components.

    Re: 8800gts a big improvement from 7800gt?

You should get a 50-60% gain in performance on average (look at THG VGA chart). CPU makes very little difference to games these days unless you play at a low resolution. Playing at 1280x1024 (or higher) with eye-candy on the first bottle neck you hit will be the GPU. For future games a 640 GTS would be a better investment as the extra memory will definitely be needed.

Rumoured 4 th quarter this year. Expect Nov/Dec for the pre xmas rush. If they follow the same path as before expect high end first ie GTS/GTX then spring mid range.

Really I think it is just speculation atm.

    Re: 8800gts a big improvement from 7800gt?

Yes a 8800 will be an improvement over a 7800 but to be honest I would wait for the next lot of cards to come out before I would buy one.
