    Asus P5K-E Running 2.4Ghz CPU at 1.6Ghz

    Hi Guys
Can anyone shed any light on a problem I have discovered with my new board from Scan P5K-E and Q6600 CPU.
When powered and booting to Vista 32, I start up either CPUz or Asus Ai Booster and the reading is 6 x FSB instead of 9 x FSB which if it was running standard would be 9 x FSB-266 = 2394Mhz which rounded is 2.4Ghz but CPUz and Asus AI gives 6 x FSB-266 = 1596 which is 1.6Ghz the Bios is correct at 9x so whats going on is the motherboard faulty or what.
Sometimes if you watch CPUz or Ai Monitor it will jump to correct speed but then return within a second back to 1.6Ghz and its not Speedstep as its disabled.
    Any help appreciated

    Regards
    Charlie

Disable "C1E" and "SpeedStep" in the BIOS - it's power saving software.

As above, this is power management related, takes a bit of fiddling to disable it.

Re: Asus P5K-E Running 2.4Ghz CPU at 1.6Ghz

My E6750 did exactly this (1.6GHz) when I first ran my new PC - it was the settings for the Ram and CPU that needed changing. Do not match the RAM speed to the CPU, otherwise the CPU will run at 1.6GHz - it has nothing to do with the power management - I have that on, and the CPU now steps down to 2GHz, NOT a constant 1.6, as was the case when the timings were linked with RAM.

Dont disable speed step...Just leave it.

When you do CPU intensive stuff it will raise itself.

Why would you want it running at full pelt when there is no need?

    Hmm that doesn't make sense but the minimum multiplier for E6750 and Q6600 under EIST is 6X, with a Q6600 the default FSB is 266 (266 x 6 = 1596), for E6750 it is 333 (333 x 6 = 1998 Mhz).

Assuming above is reason for clockage then as for why your E6750 originally clocked at 1.6 Ghz even under load I would guess your motherboard BIOS did not recognise the E6750 settings out of the box (P5K Deluxe is same PCB design as the P5K-E I think you have and the release BIOS didn't support E6x50 series CPUs) and may use the lowest available multiplier and default FSB until you manually correct it.

Ram to FSB ratio shouldn't impact EIST, if it is in your case I don't know why that would be so

    Thanks Guys
It was indeed the setting for C1E just goes to show that you dont know everything all of the time.
I had already turned off speedstep but this C1E evaded my radar.

    Thanks again

Yes, I think you're correct; I have upgraded three PCs in the space of a month, and I clean forgot the motherboard that I had probs with (1.6GHz instead of 2actually died on me (Gigabyte P3-DS3R), and a fault found when RMA'd - the replacement I bought has been great, though.
