120gig 7K250 for £61 :(

I bought 2 120gig Hitachi/IBM 7K250 about a few weeks ago for £73 and now Simply (4th item down) have them for £61. I'm using them in RAID0 and they are as fast as you will get IDE hard rives to run apart from spending a lot more on Raptors.

I don't think many people (myself included) will ever go back to IBM after the deathstar's
Also, I'm sure the Maxtor's (especially with the 8meg cache) would give them a run for their money.
I cans see if that is an 8 meg cache model though as your link doesn't work.

I totally agree with your sentements as I had one of the fabled GXP 75's, well two actually. One went belly up but the other is still alive today, probably 'cos I took extra precautions to keep it very cool as that was the suspected cause of the click of death.

The reason why I went back for a try is

1) They are the fastest 7200 drives out at the moment

and as you can see from the storagereview test they come close to 36 Raptors in a few tests.

2) They are the only people who still do a 3 years warranty on the 7200rpm IDE drives! WD and Maxtor is now only 1 year.

This was a big reason as I've just replaced a drive for my brother which was two years old but still come under his 3 year warranty. Also the GXP180 was actually a very good drive and very reliable. I think IBM went to extra lengths to improve on this considering the fiasco of the GXP75/60's.

The warrantys depend on the drive though : The Maxtor 8meg cache 120gig and upwards (i THINK, ill have to check that, dont think its 160) come with 3 years.

I know Hitachi took over IBMs failing HD department, but i dont see any reason to move from maxtor at the moment . When im buying HD's for other systems, there has been several times i have almost had one of those drives, but there is always that little guy in my head slapping me with a wet fish, telling me not to be so stupid. Last thing i need is a customer coming back to me in a few months after they had lost all their data. I know i know, IBM/ Hitachi fixed there problems a long time ago, i just need to figure out how to kill that little guy of doubt.
I might get another 80 gig 8 meg cache and RAID 0 them together if i get some free cash soon, all these dam disk images take up so much space !

been using 180GXP for a year and now changed to Hitachi S-ATA.. all good! they are also one of the fastest desktop hdd (put away the raptors)

Agent you're right about the warranty on Maxtor, on all drives of 120 gig + AND with 8 meg cache it's 3 years. I was going to get the 80 gigs at first that's why I was given that info.

I would have still got the 7K250. Besides you can't beat £61 for 120 gig for the fastest 7200rpm drive out. (I'm still bitter!)

Samsung still do 3yrs warranty and performs on par with it's peers if that helps

Personally I'm unlikley to trust IBM only a few drive generations on with my data, each to his/her own though and I do agree those benchmarks did make me at least look at the price of the units OEM then that little person with the fish kicked in ... I think he came as part of the 4th RMA I had to do, the one where I filled in a small claims court claim, scanned/mailed it and finally got a different generation of drive back after pointing out 80% failure rate was beyond a joke.

Well i still have my second deathstar in my machine ( first one got rma'd) but it still seems to work. Can't make out if its my Maxtor or my IBM thats making a wierd noise sometimes from a cold boot ahh well time will tell

I bought three 20Gb IBM Gx60P's in 2001.

Two were RMA'ed after about 14 months each. I'm still using them, just as storage drives.

The third is still going strong, being used as main drive to store an OS together with a Western Digital 80Gb.

I think I may trust an Hitachi drive now. Well, maybe.

... people always tend to support whatever hardware they have - remember console wars (probably still go on today - which is better, which game looks better on which etc...), however, experience dictates that you would support what hardware you have in your PC because it's in there for that reason - you support/trust it to be good (excepting the n00bs out there).

£73?!!? I paid £100 for my 120GB and now they're getting stupidly cheap.. It's all a big conspiracy i tells ya!
