We've all been expecting the new generation of ASUS' Eee PC to land any moment now, and land it has, with an 8.9" screen and improved resolution.

Looks very interesting. Kind of wish I'd waited for this instead of getting an original Eee PC (a 4G in white) which is actually very good except for the screen resolution.

Darn - one of the great things with the eee is the speakers FACE you which makes it a very handy media player (as they're pretty loud too).
I'm interested, but i don't know if i'll pony up for one in the summer. Long time to wait inexplicably.

Re: ASUS Eee PC 900 makes its debut

is it just me or do I think this is a step in the wrong direction. According to reports the 900 model is going to cost £305ish for the very bare bones one. This price is creeping up to a budget laptop price and makes it hard to justify buying when you can buy a £300 laptop that will be vastly more powerfull. The charm of the EeePC was mainly it's price and portability. Whilst it's kept the latter it's price is rising to levels of budget laptop range and that makes it less appealing.

    agreed

add in the price of the supposed windows-pre-installed version, and you're paying the same as for a "real" laptop from dell

£200 is impulse buy territory. it's cheaper than a games console, fr'example. but over £300? iffy

I think they should ship a 4G version to keep costs down. At 250 it'd still be a seller..

I agree with that, I think £250 should be the max that the EeePC should sell for as this is meant to be a cheap laptop not a full price one. I also agree with DirectHex £200ish is impulse territory as that's how I bought mine eventhough I already have two powerfull new laptops I still could find a use for the EeePC due to be ultraportable and cheap.

Another point is there is no reason to buy the new version as yes the bigger screen is nice but Linux distros like Mandriva as are now being realeased with 100% EeePc compatibility and optimization for the platform.

Is the April release date official? Did you guys hear it direct from Asus?
I've heard it's gonna be April, but also heard it could be middle of 2008/summer 2008.

still not happy about the reported pricing. £300 buys you a real laptop, e.g. The Dell Online Store: Build Your System

Although that is a really good price, it's not as portable as a small eee. If you want anything under 13" you have to pay a lot more than £300.

Saying that, if the 900 has the same processor/battery time as the 701, then it will need to be under £300.
    £250 would be about right.
Hopefully the competition will have released something by the time the eee 900 is released.

    Agreed.

By the looks of things there are going to be a large number of sub laptops hitting the market over the next 6 months. Eveything from the penny pinched Eee, up to the HP 2133 and through to those ever so lovely mini Sony Vaio things.
