    Quiet ICE Fan ?

Got the ST61G4 with the SilentX PSU. Its quiet but not quiet enough. I'm now on a mission to get it as quiet as possible without sacrificing CFM or making any major mods. Been Browsing the forums and found that ST61 uses the 80mm sunon fan, not sure which model and haven't taken it out to find out. But its not quiet. So this will be where I'll start to tackle it.

Can anyone recommend a real quiet fan that will fit nicely into the ST61 without further mods. Ideally, it would make less noise than a whisper whilst keeping the same CFM or even increasing....

While I'm at it, anyone know if I need to allow for extra with the fan if I were to add some noise damping material ?? and Anyone know the spec for the sunon fan used in the ST61 ?

So far come across the following potential replacements.......
Vantec Stealth Fan SF8025L 21 dBA 27 CFM
    SilentX 11.4/14.8 dBA 18/28 CFM
    AcoustiFanā„¢ AF80CT 14/21 dBA 15.6/25.4 CFM
    Papst 8412N/2GML 19dBA 26.5 CFM

    Thanks in advance

Please keep us informed how you get on with this... My new shuttle is noisy like a freight train! How effective was the silent PSU? I may order one...anything is better than this!!! Also Gordy's latest mod looks good - removing the airholes from the ICE fan to reduce wind noise. Where's my Dremel!?!?!

Well I recently shelled out for a Noiseblocker S3 for my SN45G. Much quieter with it in, and pretty much the same case temps. It does 38.2 CFM compared to the Sunon's 42.5 CFM but at half the noise level at full speed (26dBA rather than 36dBA). Best Ā£16 I've spent in a long time!

Now all I need to work out is whether the SilentX PSU will make a big enough difference to make it worth it. Hmm... decisions, decisions...
If you can't keep up, stick with reality...

I've heard a few things about the Noiseblocker too, So Just in the process of checking it out. No doubt, I won't be able to resist the temptation for much longer. Unfortunately, I'm still having trouble finding some software to measure the temp. Tried Speedfan which has no support for the ST61 and tried Motherboard Monitor which seems to be giving false reading.....its giving 77 celsius (very worrying), but the bios is reading 36 Celsius.

As for you guys that want to know about the SilentX, in my opion, its quiet as compared to my tower but I don't have another SFF to compare with. On top of all that, I can only hear the Sunon fan buzzin away. I would say, go the 'hibby' way, deal with the noisy ICE fan first then deal with the PSU.

I have just taken delivery of the SilenX, Noiseblocker S3 and the Accoustifan so am planning to build a new SN45G this weekend and will probbly try all 3 fans.

Best one wins - will let you guys know how I get on!

I replaced mine with a Noiseblocker S3 - very very quiet when its below the BIOS threshold but still does a very good job when you're pushing the machine a bit.

try speedfan, very useful as you can vary the speed of the fans and make them even quieter.

Noisenblocker S3, very good, set it to 4% in speedfan and its nice and quiet

The noiseiest thing in my machine is the gfx fan! Grrrrr

I've tried Speedfan with my ST61G4, however, its not supported so I can't get it to work. I also tried MBM which is giving wrong readings. Its showing 77c yet the bios is showing 36c at idle.

Any ideas, am I missing some configuration ??

I tried a Noiseblocker S3 but wasn't that impressed. It was quiet white noise, but it seemed to have an annoying fan whine which put me off. For a 10 quid fan I wasn't too impressed. Instead I got an Evercool three pin from Tekheads for about 4 quid and it runs just as quiet and without any of the fan whine either.

I did exhange the NB but the replacement I got was the same so I'm sticking with my Evercool.

I made a guide on how to silence a shuttle a way back. You can check it out here:

Speedfan should pickup the 3 sensors itself without configuring it and you can go through the wizard in MBM to get it configure itself for your system.

Anyway in MBM i used to use these settings:

    CPU - ITE8712F-2 Diode
    Case - ITE8712F-1

if they dont work checkout the forums on this place - www.sfftech.com

Thanks for the link to the noise guide, ill take a look.
