    • malfunction's system
      • Motherboard:
      • Gigabyte G1.Sniper (with daft heatsinks and annoying Killer NIC)
      • CPU:
      • Xeon X5670 (6 core LGA 1366) @ 4.4GHz
      • Memory:
      • 48GB DDR3 1600 (6 * 8GB)
      • Storage:
      • 1TB 840 Evo + 1TB 850 Evo
      • Graphics card(s):
      • 290X
      • PSU:
      • Antec True Power New 750W
      • Case:
      • Cooltek W2
      • Operating System:
      • Windows 10
      • Monitor(s):
      • Dell U2715H
    My 2p:

Good PSU, Case, CDRW/DVD and RAM

I'd change the motherboard and CPU (and overclock the b'jesus out of it):

    http://www.cpucitystore.co.uk/catalo...products_id=45
    http://www.cpucitystore.co.uk/catalo...roducts_id=392

But you'll also need a good HSF for that.

Be aware that the 9600 card you've picked is a non-pro. If you can find one for the same sort of money you'd be much better off with a 9600 pro with 128MB or take a chance on a 9800SE that *might* soft mod to a 9800 pro.

As has been said though - see if you can eliminate some of the other suppliers and reduce postage charges (maybe ebuyer do a good modem and some speakers for the same kind of price)

    Ok. No problem.

Right the 9600 normal (non-pro), the 9600 pro and the 9600XT basically just differ in terms of clock speeds. The core (GPU) on the non-pros can be overclocked to pro or even XT speeds without any trouble but the memory they use is slower than the stuff used on the pro's and XTs so even though it can probably be overclocked it won't make it up to pro or XT speed. So if you go for the pro or XT you'll end up with a faster base card and more potential should you want to overclock it.

Also 256MB RAM on a 9600 is overkill. Basically that much memory will only be useful for the most demanding games running at the highest resolutions with anti-aliasing (AA) and anisotopic filtering (AF) enabled (both of which basically smooth out the image to reduce jaggies (stepped lines of pixels at the edges of objects). The 9600 (any model) won't be able to run any such game at these settings at a good frame rate so you really would be better off with a faster card with 128MB RAM.

A 9800SE is basically a cut-down 9800Pro. The 9600 series have 4 pixel pipelines and a 128-bit bus to memory. The 9800 series - apart from the 9800SE - have 8 pipelines and a 256-bit bus to memory. This basically means that the 9800 series are capable of processing twice as much data per pass (or clock tick if you like) and also have twice the bandwidth to RAM (which helps if you need to do twice as much work!). The 9800SE on the other hand is a cut down version of the 9800 that has only 4 pipelines enabled. Some of these chips are faulty 9800s and some are fine and can be converted (via software only) to use all 8 pipelines.

Though if you can stretch to it get a 9800 Pro in the first place and eliminate the risk.

By the way - all of the above only applies if you'll be wanting the PC for playing games. If not then the 9600 is fine (in fact it's overkill for 2D and you could easily get a cheaper card).

Seeing as I've already said it in a round about way - what do you actually want the PC for?

ah ah so am i but just from reading these forums i hope to have picked some stuff up

my system may not be better than use speed wise but i think component wise better qulity products

asus mobos are better than msi and allow better clocking and support also be aware that msi is a pig for memory

tagan psu is one of the top you can buy and will see you right for a long time to come

i went for the geil ram as it is in my opinion better than kingston faster and more stable also you were going to buy 1 stick of 512 but 2 x 256 is better to allow you to use the dual channel on the mobo

hard drive you choose ibm bit crap and maxtor well known better all round 8mg cache fluid bearings for quietness

i choose the liteon cdrw combo over the sony one as i use to have a sony and it can have real probs reading some data or certain disks liteon are great you could put a newspaper in there and it would read it

choose the coolermaster case as well as i think it is better build quality better loking better airflow (coolermaster make some of the nicest cases around

ALL THE ABOVE ARE MY OPINION ONLY AND OTHERS MAY DISAGREE

but i quickley learned you buy cheap you pay the price lol

in my opinion and for your budget i thouhgt these were the best available and stable wise for you and more hassle free

ah what do i know lol

p.s i agree on the graphics side wouldnt bother with the 256 meg try and get a 9800se or even a 5900

I'm not a big gamer now, but I might buy 1 or 2 later on. I don't think I'll ever need top of the range graphics, so do u think I should stick with what I've got or should I change to a 128 MB instead of 256?
