Yet no announcements of across-the-board price cuts to compensate owners for the decimation of the re-sale market......

I really think Sony needs to remember what happened last time they took something from legitimate PS3 owners.....

... and so the extra pay on line option becomes a necessity.

No need. Games that are already owned can still be sold. You will buy the new games with the knowledge that you can't sell them on. There is no issue. If you don't like it, don't buy 'em.

Doesn't seem any different to EA's "online pass". A shame it's needed, but it's clear that developers can't keep supporting users that they get no revenue from.

    I don't buy them...and I own a PS3.

Console games are already a complete rip-off. More expensive then the PC version.....yet less time and effort spent on them, lower gfx quality, etc......and they are now completely destroying the second-hand (and I presume, rental) market as well.

Complete and utter greed.....yet another step to ensure crap games still make a profit!

i agree but releasing on consoles will always be more expensive than its pc variant as they have to pay sony/microsoft licenses. dont forget most consoles also make a loss and recoup through consumers buying games

and yes... MP codes are a PITA.. but they have to make money somewhere considering it seems as though the 2nd hand games industry is huge.

    Why?

The simple answer is that Console manufacturers have it in their heads that the resale market damages their sales figures. This simply isnt true and by fighting the resale market they are cutting off a large number of potential players and even console customers.

Quantic dream who made Heavy Rain recently commented they had lost a million sales due to the re-sale/rental market. They got this figure from the trophies system. What they fail to realise is that isn't lost earnings at all, much like piracy you can say that because somebody played a game without buying a retail version, its a lost sale. A lot of people who rent would never buy a retail copy. And a lot of people like myself who buy 2nd hand wouldn't buy at full price as full price is ridiculous! If I rent I am not a lost sale, I wouldnt have bought in the first place!

This is without going into the realm of first sale rights. The fact is If i buy a product its completely my choice whether i sell it on again, or put it in the bin. Console manufacturers have no rights to this market any more than musicians have a right to demand money when we re-sell cd's!

On top of that how can sony have the balls to pull a move like this? If this was Microsoft I'd be more receptive (and thats not fanboy talk here, I own both consoles). The simple fact is that Sony's online experience is terrible compared to the centralised and easy to use system that is Xbox live. They also obviously have a wonderful track record with data security over at sony, and are just adding more reasons for people to NOT but games on the PS3 for online play.

This move has firmly relegated my PS3 into the position of glorified Blueray player and media center.

How can it not be true? They make the majority of their money from the sale of retail games. They don't get any cut from the second hand market.

You're not a customer who pays for them for their product, so in what way would you imagine they care about what you think?

You can still sell it, but the services that a retail purchase pays for will not be available to the second hand user (the online part, at the moment), because they haven't paid for access to it.

I'd get used to the idea of giving up (online) console gaming then, because this'll be widespread across all consoles within the very near future. Developers and console manufacturers cannot afford to support users who do not pay them for their services.

Soon even single player games will need a code to unlock all the features, thus reserving the full experience for people who didn't buy second hand.

If I recall, Rage (from iD) does this already.

The price of a PS3 is significantly less than the price of a pc that would match the PS3 in gaming, a pc is better yes for decent spec pc's but at a cost.

And the PC is a generic device with a lot of uses that a console (PS3 or otherwise) cannot match. Many people buy a PC for things other than, or in addition to, gaming.

To be honest it'll probably stop me buying PS3 games. As it is I always buy the PC version if one is available so it's only the exclusives like Red Dead Redemption I get on the console.
I'll just have to miss those.
