I know that a few SIs are having problems shipping systems because hard-drive inventory is so low.

Well that's going to kill the budget on those shiny storage arrays I had planned at work!

The pricing is absolutely mental. Some of the drives have literally jumped in price by over 100%

Was hoping to build a new system after christmas. Gutted. No chance I'm spending £200 on a decent sized hdd. Was only looking about £50 before the shortage. I'll wait it out.

Re: News - HDD shortages into 2012 as prices continue to rise

Hmm, I was looking for a 1TB WD USB3 bus-powered drive at the weekend and was shocked to see that not only was Scan more expensive than PC World, but Western Digital's own store was cheaper too.

Wonder if these shortages are to blame - with PC World and WD having larger stocks of drives at the old prices than Scan?

You will probably find most other retailers will follow trend if they have not already. If you see a drive available to purchase at a low price i would advise you to buy it as drives are expected to rise even further.

I'm starting to fill my current hard drive so it looks like I better hunt down a cheap one whilst I still can.

Sounds like good advice - wasn't slagging Scan off btw, merely expressing surprise that a company that's usually very price competitive, (assuming you ignore the box-shifting, customer-services-is-via-email-only folks), was so uncharactistically expensive.

    If you can.

As for the shortage, I'd say the extent of damage to production facilities key. How long will factories be out of order? Can factories elsewhere pick up the slack, and to what extent?

Personally, while I was about to add some capacity, I'm not in any great hurry, so I'll wait it out. If that takes a year or two, so be it. I'm certainly not paying prices that look to me, judging by the speed of increase, to be sheer profiteering .... though by who and at what point in the chain is not clear.

This will have a huge impact on PC/laptop sales globally if manufacturers don't resolve this price and demand issue quickly.
