I tell you what - this extreme push to Metro on all fronts is either going to pay off big time for Microsoft or back fire badly. As to how I feel about it - lets just say I wouldn't want to buy any Microsoft shares any time soon - Pre Win9 I might though!

I mean really microsoft?! What are they thinking in doing this, express editions are a great way of helping people learn about software development.
Stopping XNA is stupid. I always like a lot of the bedroom grade games you find.
Stopping WinForms/WPF is just incredibly stupid.

Hopefully they will at least give students access as they aren't going to fork out. especially as students generally don't develop desktop applications
I think I'll just carry on using the vs11 beta for a while though... I quite like it
Will probably end up with a Student Version of the tools, same as the Windows and Office academic versions, full versions at a lower price I expect.

What do I know about touch devices. I never owned a touch enabled phone or a tablet or never have used touch screen controllers on equipment even 7 years ago.
Touch is not a big deal(only for those who are new to it),if you have already used it,but for people who do want to do actual work which actually works best with old fart instruments like mice and pens it isnt, at least not in the way it is implemented in Windows 8. Apple will probably end up doing it better IMHO(sadly,but I am being objective here).
It does not change the fact that most Windows 8 devices at launch won't be touch anyway especially with the added cost of touchscreens for most companies unlike the economies of scale Apple,seems to have when it comes to procuring parts.
Vast parts of the world are cost conscious,so price is going to an important part of the equation too.
Funnily enough,Windows 8 is another OS which I have run for months since the first dev preview,the same with Windows 7 and even Vista which I had access to and various other OSes too. Trying different UIs is fun,to see what is available.

How about you remove the Metro interface from Windows 8 instead, huh?
At the very least, let people completely disable it so that users can get the under-the-hood improvements from Windows 8 whilst keeping a pretty-much-identical user interface!
It is because Microsoft wants to stop people from developing desktop software and make them move towards developing apps,which they probably have more control over and probably can make more money from.
Moreover,it also means they effective pushing people towards bulking up the total number of apps,so they can compete against iOS and Android.
Microsoft has a desktop monopoly so can do this. However,if companies like Valve are moving towards making Steam work with Linux(even with its small market share),it does make me think if there is some backlash against this already.

Try working on 500+ page documents with only a touchpad and you'll reconsider that position rather sharpish. I'd argue the same for web developers/coders/dba/etc. Keyboard & Mouse for home/work use is here to stay, unless the PC has just become a glorified xBox?
On another note, you should have the infraction winging its way to you presently. Insulting other members (whether in a failed attempt at humour or not) has never been acceptable.

Exactly. Any kind of productive activity necessitates at least a keyboard to get anything done. Just because the loony unproductive touch craze has reached fever pitch, it doesn't mean the kind of tasks which gets anything done suddenly becomes irrelevant.

The funny think is that people don't get that the concepts of touch,voice commands and things like keyboards and mice are not new concepts. People have been researching them for the last 40 to 50 years. The reasons that so many interfaces exist are down to the fact different workloads require different input schemes and in some cases the added problem of the technology not being mature,also meant using alternate schemes.
Word processing and number crunching is one of the main reasons why we have the current UI system for computers,as many of the experts worked out it made sense for that workload and why it has stood the test of time for 40 years.
Many of us being techies will probably jump onto newer technology and interfaces quicker than the general public,and won't hesitate to criticise it either.
Its like for example someone saying that joysticks in planes existed before the keyboard and mouse and should be replaced by the latter as only old people use them,and plenty of people play flying games can manage with a keyboard and mouse.
Anyway,the picture I made was more for humour,and sums up the attitude Microsoft has if you follow what their devs are pushing.
