Sweet. Just a shame Ubuntu has such a nasty interface by default but assuming it'll work just as well with proper Gnome or KDE desktop?

This is just going to be a case of "we needed something we could all build against, this is popular so this is it". It won't be tied to a particular window manager, and is unlikely to be tied to a particular distribution assuming library versions for basic things like libc6 are satisfied.

Excellent. I wonder if Half-Life 3 will support Linux when it comes out in 2018?

Perhaps by then I won't have a god awful Intel IGP in my otherwise hella-fast, hella-portable laptop.

This is awesome news, even if I'll just be using it for steam chat to begin with on my laptop.
If they can get games working properly aswell, my reasons for sticking with Windows will plummet.

Hmm, one step closer to a Valve/Steam dedicated gaming OS?

2018... I think you are being optimistic there.

I look forward to Steam on Linux and hope that it encourages game developers to use OpenGL spurring development in open source operating systems and game libraries.

As you say it's a good start - and the choice of Ubuntu seems pretty sensible, (since it's very popular and has a good software store of it's own).

Like some here, I've got a Windows desktop primarily for non-console gaming (and, in my case, Photoshop Express and DB Poweramp), everything else (mail, office, web) I can do via Linux. So anything that makes it easier to switch to Linux fullltime (perhaps with a Windows VM) is good for me.

Just as long as the "freedom" advocates don't start wittering on about closed source etc.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Re: News - Valve confirms Steam for Ubuntu on new Linux Blog

All the times I lauged at Phoronox and their "Steam for Linux is imminent, honest guv" articles... This is good news at least for those Linux users who are afraid of using Wine, and I suppose that there will be an official list of supported games.

The Source engine has worked very well under Wine for some time now, so hopefully it should be a simple enough task to port more titles. Native OpenGL support in Linux will be great too.

Now all I need is a non-Ubuntu version...

No, you'll have the choice of a god-awful Intel IGP with excellent CPU, or a killer AMD IGP with god-awful CPU

Probably going to be like Apple version where less than half of their whole catalogue isn't supported.
If anyone should acquire TransGaming, Valve should. Getting each and every publisher to make their game multi-platform would prove to be difficult if not impossible.
