Having so many years on PC building/upgrade experience, I have my own theory as to computer- related injuries.

The success of any computer upgrade is inversely proportional to the amount of injuries sustained while working on the upgrade.

For example, dropping a case on your foot will pretty much ensure that the new video card will work properly. For a more significant upgrade, such as a new motherboard/memory combo, you have to at least draw blood and hopefully cause noticeable scarring.

Of course, there are two exceptions to the rule. The first is intentional self mutilation- this does not appease the computer hardware gods, and will probably cause your memory to fry. The second is a bit dated, but no injury short of decapitation will cause an upgrade to a Packard Bell to go right.

a friend of mine tried very hard not to injure himself during a build, and his pc has never worked right.... but when I went around to look at it, cut my finger on a badly finished edge, re-seated processor, memory and gfx card - and it's all been fine. the hardware gods DO require a blood sacrifice!

Since we're on the topic of HP:

I've just upgraded to XP on my parents PC, and they also wanted everything deleting, so that's what I did. But now it's not letting me put the files back. It just stops and freezes. What's wrong - or is it just cos it's a HP?

Well, it's a 500 MHz processor, 192 MB RAM (I think XP's OK with 128?). It's just when I copy files over that I saved from before re-formatting the drive. Sometimes it says "cannot read from source file or disk. Also, twice now, it's shut down after a minutes warning saying here's a problem with lsass.exe in system 32.

What do you recommend? Should I go back to win 98? Should I create a new thread?

...and It is true a nice coat of blood on the bottom of the case does make the PC building gods happy indeed

Apart from some minor cuts I generaly pay my sacrifice to the hardware gods in toasted components. Frankly, I wish I could get away with just injuries, at least they cost nothing to heal.

Rofl. It does appear to be true though. Getting metal blanking plates out for the cd drives is a good place to start if you are looking to sacrifice some skin.

Dells have some very conveniently designed cases, which don't leave much scope to injury. But the ones we got seem to work alright, there've been some faults over the year and a half we had em, but not a lot. Which makes me wonder. Do they like have a worker on a conveyor belt showering pcs with his blood as they float past him? That would be a job title i would like to see.

i did that exact thing whilst getting out a floppy blanking plate while i was working at Maplins (boo hiss)

blood went _EVERYWHERE_ all over the motherboard, gfx, front of the case, dripped on the floor on the way to the loo... back of the ambulance, on the trolley bed

seriously though i had to have 4 stitches and I've got a gnarly looking scar all down the left hand side of my right index finger

but, the gods must have been please as the machine i was building never came back again (as most Maplin systems do, due to crap components)

Hmm, sounds like good news with my machine then. Managed to smash my foot against the case accidentally while stepping over my half-assembled machine. The pain! Oh and I thought coolermaster cases were supposed to have no sharp edges - yeah, right. Oh and a trapped finger in one of the bays might havehelped (Don't ask!)

Wow, that is so true.

Tried to bend some metal spikes (they were sitting on the edges of the drive bay.) They were pretty sharp, stabbed straight into my finger

Won't work if you read original post. It needs to be a genuine accident, extremely painful and possibly involves shedding blood!
