Free and Open Source Software - Part 3

Our resident FOSS maestro, Jo Shields, has concluded his three part look at Free and Open Source Software. Covering everything from installing and configuring Debian, using FOSS on Windows operating systems, right through to installing 3D accelerated drivers under Linux, if you're into Linux you'll want to read. Here's a snippet from part three.

Installing nVidia drivers on Linux is fairly easy, with that little bit of preparation. Go to the nVidia homepage and download the latest driver, then run it with "sh filename". The installer will tell you to go away, since you're running under X. Okay, no problem. Tell X to go away with "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" as root, and run the installer again (as root), from within a text console. When it asks you, don't let it check for interfaces on the nVidia FTP server - they don't have anything for Debian users on there. When the installer finishes, you need to make a couple of changes (again as root) to the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

If you missed parts one and two, find those here and here.

    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    The writing style "feels" rushed.

it was written in the same 3am-after-a-few-beers environment as the rest.

it has a slightly faster pace to it than the previous articles as the intention was that people would have both learnt new things in the interim, and be eager to get newer things sorted such as ALSA.

since I did these of my own volition I certainly didn't have a deadline to work to, so there wasn't any rushing to get done, as such.

Ive just followed it and its another good article from you . However i think somthing has changed since you wrote it: when i go to downloaded the mplayer-fonts it says the name is different and cannot download. Woudl you know what its changed to? Ive searched the debian package list and it isnt on there. From what i typed any way. Other than this everything has gone smoothly so far. Sound isnt working yet since i havent told it to feed my digital out port but i know how to do this any way. One more thing, I want to get amsn on there so would i need to download TK/TCL packages to get it to work or are they already pre-installed?

Thanks again for this. It was worth the wait imo

you're right, i checked the ftp that the mplayer packages live on, and there's no mplayer-fonts on testing. it DOES exist on unstable. i don;'t know why that's the case, but it is :/

    i'd ignore it for now.

    as for amsn...

    Depends: imlib1
    Depends: tcl8.4 or tcl8.3
    Depends: sox
    Depends: tk8.4 or tk8.3
    Depends: libpng10-0
    Depends: docker
    Depends: tcltls

apt-get, aptitude etc will automatically pull in the dependancies, that's what they're paid to do.

an alternative to apt-get. it provides a drop-in replacement for most functions (e.g. you can use aptitude update or aptitude upgrade), or you can run it wih no parameters & it'll run a command-line-based gui (like the installer) for selecting packages. it generally has better dependancy handling than apt-get.

dselect is the older program which did the same job
