Shame about the lack of spindown/shut down - I wouldn't like to just power off a storage device!

Also, what's fan noise like? A few of these devices have terrible tiny fans.

The fact the disks are always spun up is good for systems where small amounts of data are constantly being read I guess Like in a group Media server or something but I just think its gunna be louder and more power-consuming than the rest of the competition when idle

I've recently purchased there 2TB linkstation drive and was also a bit surprised to find I could only schedule it on / off on a time of day / week basis and not an idle spool down.

"Creating a centralised storage solution for all the devices in your home has to be one of the most satisfying hobbies a PC enthusiast can have"

At least until you have a PC with window 8 on it when it rapidly turnis into one of the most infuriating exercises ever - whether your libraries will work on the NAS is a total lottery (never got Windows photos app to work) but that is because MS believes that anyone who has a NAS is a fool and should use MS Skydrive.

Any how back to linkstation. Nice price, decent performace but a 2 bay drive is not for me. 4 Bay for Raid 5 for me
