£1099 for a base model is still too expensive.

The pro still looks like a trash can. Actually that's not fair, it looks like a very expensive trash can.

It's funny because every demo of OSX they always show the devices not actually using the full screen. Seriously, who the hell uses their machine like that? There should be some kind of society to prevent the underutilisation of screen real-estate, I appreciate the iconbar at the bottom takes away lots of space, but still....

You're just buying the name of this laptop that's why it's pricey. well they still have the market for people looking for the "apple" brand.

Re: News - Apple reveals cheaper Haswell updated Retina MacBook Pros

The new dell xps 15 with pretty much identical specs (most expensive ones unfortunately) to macbook pro is at least 300 quid cheaper.... yeah I know it's a dell but I haven't had any issues with dell (admittedly business) laptops unlike the hp ones....

Crystalwell IRIS graphics really aren't anything special in my opinion in a pro laptop so you'd end up on the nvidia one....which still isn't a 'pro' video card

I fully expect the m3800 from dell with the quadro k1100 to come in at roughly the same price as the mac and that does have a 'pro' graphics card lol

Would you believe that's exactly how I use it.
The full screen is a "nice" feature, but I don't know, something about it feels wrong and I just prefer having millions of windows scattered around
okay well not millions, but you get the idea.

Back on topic, Still too pricey for an upgrade. Guess I'm gonna have to hold on to my current unibody

The Mac Pro / Dusty Bin is a bold design, remains to be seen if it works well or not, looks like it'll be better sat on your desk rather than blowing hot air up around your knees! I'm sure that type of tightly integrated design is right for a "Pro" level desktop, no upgradability and little user serviceable parts by the looks of it. Macs are moving further and further away from being a tinkerer's machine with every generation.

I'm as anti apple as they come but I can't help thinking that the Macbook Pro is not that expensive anymore. Not too much of a premium over an equivalent(ish) Vaio Pro 13

I wouldn't want one but I don't think I can call it terrible value anymore

Re: News - Apple reveals cheaper Haswell updated Retina MacBook Pros

Not surprised about the macbooks though it remains to be seen how well iris performs, last I checked it was the most powerful integrated graphics so far but that's not saying much and it still couldn't hold a candle to a low-ish end nvidia chip. Speaking of which, why a 750M not a 765M in the high end MBP? 10W more yet it's so much more capable.

The Mac Pro... is gonna be extremely interesting. The closest things to those top end AMD cards atm are FirePro W9000s which push out about 270W of heat. Two of those and then a 150W CPU is gonna be an awful lot of load for that relatively small, low surface-area heatsink. I've also no idea how they made such a tiny high-wattage PSU

I don't think full screen apps are meant for desktop devices. I agree it doesn't work well that way. However, I use only full screen apps on my MacBook Air and it works extremely well. A three finger swish on the trackpad whizzes you between screens. It did feel strange at first but now I won't use my MBA Amy other way.

You are full screen on a 30" dell 3008WFP right now.....

I can't abide it any other way.
