Acer makes some nice gear but, as the old cliche says, "there's a price to all this cheapness". I've never had an Acer product that lasted more than six months without developing some kind of fault. And it's not as if these were treated harshly.

Now I figure it's just not worth the hassle and usually recommend (if asked) to spend a little more and get something with a bit of resiliancy.

+1 after seeing the debacle with my friend's Acer Netbook that rapidly became good only for a doorstop, I would never recommend them.

I had an Acer laptop for 3 years with no issues... Even sold it to my sister about 2 years ago and it still going strong. I was very careful with it though - Decent laptop bag, never picked it up by the screen etc. Couldn't beat the value - Bluray + dedicated GPU for £400 when similar machines where well over £600 from everyone else. If I was getting one for travelling I would have probably gone else where however.

Thing is - at first the cheap stuff is great. But over time people get fed up of the poor build quality and reliability and end up looking to spend a bit more on something better. This is what Acer is going through right now. Really they've shot themselves in the foot as even if they did suddenly start making decent stuff - the name / brand is tarnished with "can't afford a decent laptop? Get an Acer then".

You got the exception that proved the rule?

Big thing - other than poor reliability - that I've got against Acer is the utter lack of anything useful for post-sale support. If I buy a Dell, HP, Sony or Lenovo then I know I can go to their support site and get new drivers, user manuals and service manuals as downloads. Acer don't seem to do much in the first two categories and if you want a service manual then heaven help you. Invariably I want to upgrade my laptops/netbooks as technology progresses and with Acer's approach that really isn't feasible - unless you want to rely on 3rd party information such as that on You Tube.

As a practical example - I recently had to replace the failed WLAN card on my wifes Inspiron 1525 (about five years old). Not only was I able to get a suitable replacement part - from Dell themselves - but all the documentation/drivers etc I needed were readily available.

No, as far as I'm concerned, Acer's are cheap but not something (your experience permitting) that is going to last more than a year or two.
