Re: News - Gigabyte launches first fanless quad-core Bay Trail motherboard

Why do motherboard makers insist on putting a DSUB connector for VGA on their boards? Use a DVI-I connector and let the user decide if he/she wants to use it for analog or digital video. The space freed up by ditching the DSUB connector can be used for DisplayPort (or HDMI if need be). And what's up with the serial ports?!?

Apart from that this board looks snazzy. Performance seems decent considering I've been using a Core2 Duo E8400 up until about a year ago and wasn't really too performance-starved. I could see this making a nice router/firewall or something along those lines.

Two sata ports is a bit annoying, was thinking this would be great for NAS but 4 would be needed

Clearly aimed at business/integrated system applications (serial ports, d-sub, only 2x SATA etc.). Would be interesting to see what a board partner could do if they approached it more from a SFF enthusiast perspective...

    PCI port, Really!?

If this had a bucket load of SATA or a PCI-E slot (for additional SATA Ports) it would be a no brainier for a home NAS

change the serial ports to usb ports, change the pci to pci-e and give 4+ sata ports and you'd have a nice basis to a home server.... or even low power 'web browsing' computer

Well you dont need the additional USB ports, PCI-E or sata ports for a web browser

Agree 100% - my first thought too when I saw "fanless quad core" was "= really good NAS/DNLA box". That said there are PCI SATA II cards easily available (e.g. Lycom ST-125NR that'll add another 3 internal ports, available for £45 from Scan). PCIe would have definitely been a better option though.

On a related point, anyone know if a SATA multiplier card could be used? (Like this one) Okay, not ideal for a heavily used NAS, but then again, you probably wouldn't be using this mobo for the basis of a "commercial grade" NAS.

Maybe we need to wait for a "Gen 2" board? Although that £90 pricetag looks very tempting.

These CPUs only come with 4 PCIe lanes in total. After all, Intel wouldn't want Nvidia giving them decent graphics like they did with Ion in the past would you

There is a mini-pcie card and the second network port must be using a lane, so you you would only get a x1 expansion card left.

I agree, first thing I thought when I saw this was as being useful for an EPOS system lol

Hmmm suppose that explains it. Hopefully some decent Kabini ITX motherboards will come out that correct these shortcomings.

Projectors, and other legacy equipment you're more likely to attach to ITX type equipment. Same goes for the Serial ports, people might well buy this as a cheap solution to use with legacy peripherals, it's clearly not aimed at gamers or the HTPC crowd.

These are not the NAS chips - they have specific Atom chips (Avoton) focussed on those use cases. Howabout 12 sata ports on a mini-itx? http://techreport.com/news/25703/asrock-combines-avoton-soc-12-sata-ports-on-mini-itx-mobo
