Will undoubteldy sell a load on the back of the Amazon brand. I know a load of non-IT people who think Kindle Fires are ebook readers for example. then if you ask them are they a tablet they also say yes. Probably makes sense if you buy into the Prime subscription thing.

strangely I'm just not interested in an Amazon phone.... they're not exactly known for updating the os on the kindle fires so I'd hate to think what the phone would be like.

The parallax effect would grow old so quickly it's daft, I had it back in windows mobile 5 with a start shell and it got disabled within a day...

The firefly shopping assistant is just google goggles for the amazon store....

Spec wise the phone isn't too bad although 1280x720 on a 'high end' phone is just not good enough these days.

I will say IF mayday works as well as the rest of amazons customer service (been top notch for me personally) it's something that Google etc really could do with adding into android as getting help with android issues isn't always that smooth.

I wonder how quickly this will be de-amazon-ified and loaded up with some sort of stock Android. Have to admit, that when it gets to the hardware and the looks I'm liking it (reminds me a bit of a Galaxy S2), but I'm not too keen on FireOS and that heavy Amazon-integration.

Re: News - Amazon launch Fire smartphone with Dynamic Perspective

How disappointing I was looking forward to the announcement but had somehow forgotten that Amazon cripple all their devices with "FireOS"

They have launched a fairly standard phone with a "3D" gimmick that will likely drive you crazy unless you sit still and don't move whilst using it; by the time you remove FireOS and install stock android (assuming there are drivers etc so you can put on KitKat) you just have an average android device.

Amazon are missing a huge opportunity by sticking relentlessly with FireOS and their walled garden approach - I guess they are making enough money as it is, but they simply don't have the marketing power in the tech space to take that approach. Far too late to the party too - Microsoft have spent millions (if not billions) and still can't crack it. They only have to talk to Facebook to see how easy it is to fail in this market.

It's one saving grace is that it is expected to be relatively cheap in the UK - its had to tell from the US prices as their contracts are built differently, but if this is free on £15-20 contracts then it has a chance of some good sales on that factor alone..

That said, i'll buy one if they promise to add chrome cast support to instant video

Re: News - Amazon launch Fire smartphone with Dynamic Perspective

If this is priced well (and assuming of course that any of the UK teleco's pick it up - which seems like an easy assumption) then I think it'll sell pretty well to those folks for whom "real" Android is just too scary. Might be a strange thing to say, but I think this'd be a natural device for putting on Three's All-You-Can-Eat tariff's - that way you can sup at Amazon's waterhole to your hearts content - and I'm thinking particularly of that streaming music service and Instant Video.

Actually, given Amazon's brand recognition if this is any good then I can see it stealing some sales from iPhone, the same way that the Kindle Fire's sucking them away from iPad.

Personally though, I don't see anything to interest me. More interested in a "conventional" phone, like this year's Nexus (if it comes), or a Sony Z2 or that LG G3, the latter especially if the G3 Prime is available at a decent price.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Don't count on it being cheap in the UK and I doubt you'll get native chromecast support because Amazon have their Fire TV product
