    Codec irritation

Having found a good version of Call On Me by Eric Prydz, imagine my irritation to find that now when I go to enjoy this masterpiece of choreograhy and funkified 80s pop, I find that it now plays back in a super-wierd primary-color-o-vision. I can't take a screenshot to show what it looks like, but basically the whole vid just plays back in psychedelic 8-bit colours that bear no relation to the originals. This happens whether I use Windows Media Playre or Quicktime (or any of the other players I have), so I assume that the relevant codec has become corrupted. Can anyone advise me how to fix it? I love this video (but not for the reasons you might think ).

Not sure if this is the same problem, but a couple of weeks ago, all my WMV videos started playing back in psychedelic colours as you describe... Media Player would also used to create empty text files called dxva_sig.txt. Anyway, it was a codec issue, something to do the the recent Catalyst drivers apparently, though I hadn't updated them recently...

Anyway... there is a patch to correct the problem, the filename is CodecPatch1.0.zip ... Trouble is, I can't remember where I got it from... I'll have a look and report back, if I can't find it I can email it to you.

Could be various things. I had the problem you described with the latest Catalyst drivers and WMV files. It can also be caused by conflicting/non-existant codecs and corrupt video files. You could try some of the following.

    Alter your video drivers.
Use VideoLAN, a free media player that dosn't use codecs.
Use WinAMP, it often plays files that won't play in other players.
Get ffdshow - set it up to handle your video type.
To err is human. To really foul things up ... you need a computer.

OMG! What is this some kind of 80's teaser for an opening of a porno? Who! just found the 128 meg uncensored version!

On a side note, I'm now looking for a much higher quality vid of that! If I find one it will be added to my collection!

Edit: oh, and download the codec pack! I'm shure it will fix your problems...

you've given _NO_ information on what it is - what file sypes, what codecs, etc.

if it's a wmv, then phone microsoft tech support, that's what you pay them for. if it's an AVI, then download gspot and run it on the file - it should identify what codec the file uses, and what codec your system uses to decode it. if you have 'ffdshow' installed, that's the probable culprit. install the latest nic xvid binary (google for nic xvid binary), and that should correctly handle video for xvid or divx files.

Is the k-lite Mega Codec Pack worth installing? Why does Caged say they are evil?

I use VideoLAN most of the time, it is great. Every so often there is a file it cannot play, or it plays it with no sound. I did not realise VLC was codec free. How does it manage that?

Lots of people install codec packs and it wrecks 3 formats to give you 1 extra.
I have tried a couple in the past to try to play some obscure sound format in a .AVI file, but they caused me more problems than they fixed.

Now I just install the basic players (Media Player 10, DivX Player, PowerDVD), the XviD codec, the AC3 filter codec and the OGG/OGM codecs.

the libraries (i.e. codecs) are compiled directly into the VLC .exe file, rather than relying on the windows codec structure.

for one thing, that means it can compile identically on multiple platforms, such as linux && macos

Sorry about the delayed reply folks. I was on a major booze/hyperactivity rush when I posted on Friday night, and then forgot about it until I got a bit drunk again tonight and went to watch the video again.

I hadn't considered that the Cats might have broken it, I did indeed upgrade to 4.10 (or something) recently, that's almost certainly it. I'll bung the patch on tomorrow.

In Cat's 4.11 there is a control under options to hardware accelerate WMV files. Uncheck that box and it might fix your problems with that CAT release.

Ah. I shall give that a go. Cheers. I should have fixed this ages ago but I'm a deeply lazy git....
