Why are manufacturers still shipping optical drives? remove it and make it lighter / bigger battery.

This looks....powerful... but a step backwards in gaming notebook design.

Saying that, it still gets the little child inside of me shouting about it. (The same one that like big brutish and over styled Lambo's!)

Amen! Even if they remove it to make it thinner, it would be a welcome change for something like this. If you really want to use an ODD, get a USB one.

Also, 880M with 8GB of memory? Why?

Because not all of the world has true broadband - including much of the US (although a very good argument could be made for having an external OD at this point, at least for a desktop replacement. For a portable/luggable, not so much)

Re: News - MSI launches the GT72 Dominator Pro gaming notebook

I listen to CDs and watch BD on my laptop, so as far as I am concerned, optical drives aren't obsolete. I also take the view that if it is a desktop replacement monster anyway, then there is no harm in building the optical drive into the machine. The battery life is going to be crap regardless, so for me, it is more of an insurance for when I accidentally pull the power plug. As for external OD, I do not want wires and other things cluttering the desks, I already have enough portable HD to do that. I'd rather have something take more vertical space (i.e. thicker). Now if I want a thin/portable laptop, that is a different story.

Not being an annoyance but if wires are a bother what about this. Doesn't do Blu-rays however so not ideal for your usage.
