Would love to see someone do a 4K gaming review but instead of the focus being on what FPS the graphics cards get with x settings across the board, it being what settings the cards can do to maintain 60fps.
I ask this because of the nature of being fair and to stress them, graphics cards settings are nearly always max settings with high AA and all bells and whistles. And whilst that is awesome to see, I feel it would be more beneficial to know what your current rig would be able to do if you got this monitor.
Also, would be nice to know where bottlenecks are - to know which cards have the horsepower to crank out 4K, and which can do it whilst also doing AA, and if not, why, is it because of lack of VRAM or just the card not having the grunt ? When you get to high resolutions, even high powered cards can struggle because of lack of VRAM (hell I have GTX 670s and at 1200p I get FPS drops because the GPU usage isn't maxed yet VRAM is).
I know this is a helluva lot to ask and very specific, hell it's not even a review...it's more just wanting someone to tell me whats the cheapest graphics setup for 4K
That's a really interesting idea for an article, especially focussing on max settings without AA. If you offer me enough (small enough) pixels, l'll drop AA in a heartbeat.
My priorities are frame rate, eye candy, AA. Though I'm not hardcore enough to need above 60fps.
Is 1920*1080 with full AA (whatever "full" means) nicer looking than 4k without AA? Where do other resolutions fit in that mix. What hardware do I need for each - I.e. which is best value?
If anyone wants to send me a 4k monitor I will gladly do some gaming tests for you folks with my R9 295X2

My understanding of AA (well, at least MSAA) is it takes a section into the internal VRAM, blows up the resolution, does some fancy stuff and outputs the smoother looking textures. Obviously this is wildly simplified (and maybe just plain wrong...I know it's something to do with increasing the resolution of an area), but this is the gist of it. Also this is why AA is such a tax on VRAM, because of the higher res textures....but I would guess that the internal resolution employed isn't quite as high as 4k, so I would bet that 4K with no AA looks a helluva lot better than 1080p with AA.
The argument of which AA is truly the best is a weird one...on screenshots it can kinda be noticed if you go past a certain amount (with crazy modes like CQ16 being used) but I've never noticed them whilst playing; I find 2x just fine, 4x maybe a tiny bit better but not sure if it's psychosomatic, and anything above just pointless.
Wow. Your eyes would bleed! Also your wallet, first when putting together a rig capable of that, and again when you get your electric bill haha.
I've seen dual 295X2 reviews for 4K and I think you'd be hard pressed to get 144fps out of em
Having bought the Samsung 4k monitor earlier this year I would just like to say that it has turned into the most expensive cheap (well cheap for 4k) monitor I have ever purchased.
If your intention is to game at 4k, budget for at least 2 high end GPU’s. Current generation GPU’s are not up to running games at playable frame rates at 4k unless you are running high end cards in SLI.
Current games with true 4K texture packs are already pushing 3Gb VRAM too. It won’t be long before 3Gb VRAM is insufficient.
Which brings me to my final point AA: you will absolutely need this at max if the game you are playing doesn’t have a true 4K texture pack. Imagine how blocky 800X600 graphics are when up scaled to 1080p well the same thing happens when upscaling from 1080P to 4k.

I find it hard to justify at 2560x1600 as the difference (apart from in performance) is negligible.
I doubt AA is going to do a huge amount for you if the developers have left low quality textures in. You can't add detail that was never there.
