It's an American term - I'm lead to believe that the original derivation was from a TV advert where a "mom and pop" operation were selling their Pedigree Chum competitor by saying that their own dogs test it before it went on sale to the public. Then this seemed to transition to a general concept where you use a product within the company before releasing it for sale. Note that this isn't quite the same as a beta test, in dogfooding you're releasing it to a lot more folks and looking for feedback.

Actually I'm not hearing the same kind of venom hurled against W10 as was against W8. In fact, I'll go further and tentatively suggest that if Microsoft "play a straight bat" and don't screw up the license terms and/or costs then W10 could be a major hit for them. Which is unfortunately bad news for the prospects of Linux growth on the desktop.

Trackpad gestures in W10 sound like a good idea to me - there's already plenty of that kind of thing from Logitech et al, so imposing some standardisation sounds like a good idea. Also a darn good idea for these keyboards that come with a trackpad instead of a numeric pad. Just bought one of those for one of my kids so she could replace a keyboard and mouse combo with a single unit.

There is some doubt as to the origin. While I think the idea of feeding food to your own dogs shows some confidence it is only eating it *yourself* that gets you to truly understand what you are making. So unlike beta testing it isn't about sample sizes etc, it is about feeling the joys and pain of the product yourself, not second/third hand.
