I don't really think that's a fair comment. Its a lower cost due to the lack of complex physical hardware in the screen. A G-sync unit has a processor and 768MB of RAM. Licensing might cost, but physical hardware is the kicker for G-syncs price.Huddy claims that FreeSync monitors will start shipping from December and will be around $100 less expensive than equivalent G-Sync models. The lower cost comes from AMD’s decision to make FreeSync, like its name would suggest, license-free. Nvidia’s alternative, G-Sync, requires hardware vendors to license the technology, adding additional cost to a monitor’s retail price.
Could it be a certain 34" curved LG display?
I would pick whatever is cheapest and best.
But I would need Nvidia to support Adaptive-Sync. That's my problem.
I don't want to pay the extra but I don't want a less competitive AMD card either (whatever drivers, hardware, power usage, cooling, ..)
May I guess the sold monitor is the 27" WQHD G-sync enabled ASUS one? .. PG278Q.
I could buy that one but it would be ok if it was cheaper.
I could also buy one of the 34" 21:9 1440 lines IPS ones but GPU synced.
Biscuit: They have said no for now but I guess that's because they want their license fee from the G-sync ones and keep that relevant and make it harder to sell Adaptive-Sync for some while and sell their graphics cards for as long as people don't know about the competitor.
Agent: (BS/at least a question mark) on the lack of hardware. I don't get why people thought that. Earlier they had announced three companies who make scalers who would support it.
Cool information though. I don't know what the scalers use. Guess I wouldn't assume they needed 768 MB of RAM.
Also I've been wondering about price. I have the impression the G-sync monitors cost more than $100 over a regular one. And as such I assume (and have thought that maybe that would be the way before, since it wasn't for sure it would even necessarily be cheaper) these Adaptive-Sync ones may be more costly than a non-Adaptive-Sync one.
.. and why is that?
Last time I checked (around the G-Sync launch), separate modules cost around $150 so I would guess OEMs would be able to lower the price to at least $100, given lot prices.
That really depends on if AMD have managed to replicate what Nvidia have done with G-Sync without the extra hardware, I'm going to reserve judgment until we find out what the limitations of Free-Sync are, if any. AMD's marketing department telling everyone Free-Sync does variable refresh rates is all well and good but we all know how marketing departments can put a positive spin on things, does Free-Sync really do variable refresh rates or does it just switch between predefined fixed rates.More to the point, will you be picking up a FreeSync monitor?
Will be buying one asap; if Nvidia won't support it that unfortunately locks me in to AMD when it's time to replace my 290X -- which is quite a shame, as generally Nvidia cards are less hassle, but the price premium on the card is bad enough without requiring one on the monitor too.
About a year, year and a half ago there was an AMD rep who did publicly state that G-Sync output quality was superior to FreeSync, even though the difference wasn't very noticeable. Sadly, when searching for it, I'm only getting news related to Huddy's statement.
If I recall correctly, NVidia have stated that they are supporting FreeSync (it make sense for them to do so since it is part of VESA standard anyway) starting with the Maxwell GPU's. However NVidia of course also say that G-Sync is better than FreeSync (although I'll imagine the difference really isn't that big).
I think they announced this at a recent conference - GAME24 or something?
Just checked Google after typing that...yup it was GAME24 - http://wccftech.com/nvidia-promises-support-freesync/
Not sure its worth the outlay as the technology might get surpassed quite quickly. Think I'll just get an Oculus Rift instead.
