Re: Epic Giveaway Day 11: Win a Synology DS115j

As there seems to be no mention of any hard disk capacity included with the DS115j, the lucky winner will have to provide their own hard disk!

Never had a NAS before, and this looks like a cool way to start.

Drives you can pick your own, I read somewhere that WD Red are a good option.

TBH I'd have preferred a multi drive NAS just for redundancy. But having said that, as a someone who has never had a NAS, maybe, the simpler the better.

Yup, switched all our purchasing from Seagate to WD Reds about a year ago. The seagates are dying like flies, the 200-or-so WD Reds have still to develop a bad sector between them.

When selecting a device where people are going to dump their files, mostly forget about backups, and have to jump through hoops to install an online backup system like CrashPlan (Instructions for a Synology NAS, may not work for this one http://www.hanselman.com/blog/UPDATED2014HowToSetupCrashPlanCloudBackupOnASynologyNASRunningDSM50.aspx) then give me a RAID setup any day.

*cough* not speaking from experience or anything, my backup strategy has always been bombproof *cough*
