Good interview, and Dr Su struck me as very upbeat. As someone who's been very loyal to AMD cpu's, I'd really like to see something competitive with the latest i7's, (so good single-thread performance and not needing 120W+ TDP's).

Agreed. I actually believed she was a human being with feelings and emotions. I usually think it's a drone speaking when I hear these big corp reps speak...

Her answer to that last question was brilliant as well. "My favourite products are the ones you haven't seen yet, coming in 2015" haha... Of course they are!!

But why wasn't the high end desktop Cpu question pushed? Why didn't she tell us about that? I bet they were told not to talk about that.. I KNOW YOU'RE COOKING UP SOMETHING THERE, AMD! GIVE US THE JUICY DETAILS!!

More likely is that they have nothing in the pipeline. I am sure if they did, they would give some info to start interest.

Announcing product details before products are ready for market just gives ammunition to competitors.

I mean, look at recent Intel CPU announcements. Basically, an APU with more silicon used for graphics and CPU, running the AMD64 instruction set. Now that Carrizo is announced I expect Intel will be working on a new version of Atom that works in a big core footprint. Intel are executing AMD's vision, just with worse drivers and thanks to not being stuck at 28nm with more transistors.

Just being able to use a new node will solve that and put AMD in the same TDP ball parks as all of Intels chips. Now they have no fabs they are stuck until others get it ready.

What would have been the point in making piledrivers replacement in the last few years while being stuck at 32nm????

You want to beat the i5 on performance, price and power all at the same time?

OK price is easy, I think they can already do better value with the FX range (which is why they already have my money).

Which of the other two would you want first, similar performance to an i5 but lower power or 84W like a Haswell but able to go faster?

I know it's wishful thinking to ask for all three, but you never know. It would set the cat amongst the pigeons thats for sure! I would probably go for similar power to an i5 but lower power to be honest.

Cat amongst the pigeons? It really wouldn't though.

Remember, Intel are currently giving Atom chips away, and they still sold lots of P4 chips despite them being worse in every way than the Athlon.

Personally I just want performance, my current 125W chip is fine for power usage.

You only have to look at the situation now; as far as I've been able to find out, Mullins seems to be better in pretty much every way vs Bay Trail T, and yet where are the Mullins tablets? It outperforms Atom on the CPU side and absolutely beasts it in GPU performance. The only thing I've seen less about is power consumption, but it seems extremely unlikely power is so monstrously high OEMs would turn it down. A lot of the Tegra line have been criticised as power hungry but have still found a few design wins.

I think the perception is that Intel = faster than ARM in a lot of peoples' minds, but it really couldn't be further from the truth any more. On the GPU side, anything remotely mid-range will beat it, and the CPU performance is simply average. Any recent A15 implementation or Krait 400 will have it beat. http://anandtech.com/show/8760/hp-stream-7-review/3

But OFC, it's hard to argue with free. What seems to have happened though, somewhat ironically, is that Atom has made it into a load of bargain-basement tablets you wouldn't otherwise touch with a bargepole, and people are buying them on the premise of the Intel brand. I wonder if that has a chance of altering brand perception? I mean, it's hard to make the argument of being a 'premium' brand when you're having to literally give away your chips for free, and having them mostly end up in a load of generic tablets and Android sticks.

However, it's obvious stock dumping isn't a sustainable business model, so I wonder if the x86 niche Intel may carve out in the tablet market, and the associated app support etc, will open the door to a smoother entry from other x86 competitors? Or maybe AMD are betting more on their ARM chips for mobile devices? I suppose the Skybridge diversity makes sense when you think of it like that - they're good either way.
