Re: New Intel roadmap reveals unlocked Broadwell due for Q2

    Well, I have a Phenom x4 II 965 3,4 GHz for 5+ years now.
Whatever the speed of skylake, I'll be better off with it.

Re: New Intel roadmap reveals unlocked Broadwell due for Q2

I've been pondering an upgrade for a while now. I've scrapped the thought of 4K gaming, which would have required a new mobo and CPU, mobo for PCIe 3.0 and CPU to go in it, most probably an i7. But after seeing 4K gaming in action, I just don't see it worth it (needing 2 980s just to get a decent FPS), not to mention a 28" 4K screen is too much for desktop use.

So I reckon I'll go with QHD 144hz instead, with a pair of 970s. Maybe drop in an i7 to replace the i5 but might not even do that. Intel are just too good, I've had this 2500 for 4 years and it still runs like a dream.

Re: New Intel roadmap reveals unlocked Broadwell due for Q2

I am more worried about the price now that the 4690K is approaching £200 at most retailers now. That is a ridiculous price for a i5 so just how much is the next gen going to be?

Re: New Intel roadmap reveals unlocked Broadwell due for Q2

so broadwell being on 1150/z97 will bring extra life for upgrades as skylake will be on 1151 which will be a bigger jump by bringing ddr4 to the mainstream i guess?

No, I think it's just that the progress from then has been extremely ordinary. The 2500k to the 4690k is perhaps a 20% improvement.

I just feel like poor competition from AMD has let Intel take its foot off the gas.

Bloody hell I hadn't realised the prices had crept up that much, last time I look they were £160-£170 ish.

The cynic in me says that Intel are increasing the price so they can launch Broadwell and then Skylake at £200 and claim they are the same price as the Haswell chips they are replacing .

Is it Intel pushing the price up or just rip-off Britain AGAIN?

You can see the increase in price here:

I guess the cheaper oil made it more expensive, somehow >_>

Jowsey is right about the lack of competition meaning intel can release whatever they want, whenever they want, and charge anything they want for it.

and its not like anyone can come along and take away their monopoly. the barriers for entry are absurd and you would get chewed up by intel the moment you even tried.

The rising price is probably due to dollar strengthening against the pound.

Great stuff, although Skylake is the bigger news as far as I'm concerned.

Looking forward to more details of the 100-series chipset; hoping to upgrade the x58 MoBo & i7 960 in my desktop any way and keen to take advantage of USB 3.1. Been holding off for news on the new socket before biting the bullet on my home server build too; not seeing much to convince me it's worth holding off another 6 months for that just yet but we'll see how things go.

Don't expect USB 3.1 support from Intel this soon, it's only been out a year and a half.

Yeah, I'm wondering if it's actually an unlocked i3. That would be an interesting part.
