I have the original HyperX Cloud set which, as the review states, is a rebadged Qpad QH90 set. The little rubber stopper for the mic jack even has Qpad embossed on it. It's easily the most comfortable headset I've owned - even better than my Vulcan ANC set, and I can't see any physical difference between mine and the mkII.
If the headset's headphone bit is performing enough, it's actually a great ideal to have a detachable mic, as users can use it as headset or headphones at will. And if concern over losing those parts is that much, then just get another of the oh so many products that have non removable mics.
Kudos on Kingston understanding users who prefer hardware modularity.
I had 4 pairs of these (Original HyperX Clouds) before I finally gave up. Seeing as it uses Beyer technology, I suspect that's why.
Drivers cannot handle too much bass, or they break far too easily.
Great while it lasted though (except for the rubbish microphone feedback issue).

I've owned some custom one pros (actually, I've owned 3 pairs) and a pair of 990s. All broke exactly the same way.

What exactly were you doing to break them, as you say? I'm just curious as there are countless users of both headphones you've owned that run their systems with neutral settings as well as heavily colored settings and virtually none complained about them breaking, especially due to bass.
No EQ. My 990s were broken out of the box.
Custom One Pros blew after a few months of use, twice before I sold the 3rd pair. Not to mention the disgraceful customer service they provided (well, polar audio).
I didn't use any EQ on either model, since I thoroughly enjoyed the sound of them.

Ah, if they were broken right out of the box, then sending them back was really the thing to do, depending on where you got them from.
Still find it odd that you just happened to stumble upon so many lemons at once, which is really unusual for Beyers. And I'm not particularly a fan of them, but I recognize them as being quite decent and rather good options when compared to similarly priced alternatives. There are some DT770 versions that would likely cater to your bass needs but then again, if bass (quality or quantity choice does matter) is what you're really looking for, then you would do good to look into previous gen Sony XB models (quantity), Ultrasones (quality), V-Modas, heck even Sennheiser HD600 and Panasonic HARX700 will fit your bill. Of course that choosing between closed and open cans is a personal preference in terms of both sonic characteristics, comfort and convenience.
I've got a pair of HD8 DJs (at least I did, until they weren't able to provide me with a pair that didn't creak). I then had them swap them for IE80s, but they're a little uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time (however, the perfect sound signature for me, if a little sibilant).
Back on topic though, the HyperX clouds had a really good sound for gaming. Not boomy or bloated. Clean, clear and detailed.
If you manage to keep them for a reasonable period of time without breaking (ie don't have the same misfortune as I with headphones) then I highly recommend them.

Have you thought of getting custom IEMs? While it's an expensive route, it ends up being the ideal option for people who are into IEMs. I personally couldn't find any plugs that worked fine for me, and marshmellow ones didn't cut it either.
How did you find the mic to perform on the HyperX?
It was good, but there was a significant feedback issue (can only assume a grounding issue or something within the headset?).
Happened on all devices, so not the computer.

Did you try another mic to see if it was the headset, plug, or the mic itself?
