Agreed, It will happen and it doesn't seem far now. Just have a charge pad that connects to you monitor and the mouse/keyboard.

The connections to the devices is still too slow, it needs to be 1-2 max.

Interesting video and blog post, though my only question would be what miracast device were they using as you can see the display cable disappearing down the back of the desk along with power, along with that the custom display image on the monitor was that being delivered by the monitor itself or the miracast device?

I think we will see something similar with Windows phone once Win 10 is out on all devices, hopefully MS would not see this as cutting into their tablet market share.

Well that was an interesting experiment to see how close to that I could get.


I plugged my phone (Moto G 4G) into a USB OTG cable, plugged that into a powered hub. It doesn't feed power back into the phone (not surprising really) so the phone is discharging at this point, but plugging a mouse into the hub works well enough that I got distracted reading a BBC news app, using the scroll wheel on the mouse to scroll about. Actually better than it sounds

I have an LG TV which is the only miracast display in the house. My phone wouldn't connect to it. Pah, so I break out the Hudl. That claimed to see the TV, but on trying to connect the TV just said "disconnected" and didn't want to play. I'm sure I had it work better than that in the past, but there you go, wifi sucks. Doesn't sound like a deal breaker, I have an HDMI cable for it somewhere, just means plugging in two cables. So I try the hub on the Hudl, and it doesn't recognise it. Plugging the mouse in directly works, so it seems the Hudl doesn't support hubs. That means I can't have my keyboard and mouse both plugged in at the same time, so that's that.

So it seems I need to use the Hudl to get a display over HDMI, and I would need to buy myself a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I guess what we need is "Micro Dockport" to get display and usb over a small standard connector

This is definitely the future of computing - at the low-end at least. Agree with several other comments that it would be more interesting with a windows platform though.

It does all hinge on the powered desk technology though - the sooner that comes along the better! Plus you'd want the monitor, keyboard and mouse to all be powered from the desk too, obviously

Now that is interesting thought. VNC running on the phone, VNC client in the display (something like a Pi 2 with a captive client would be great) that you can plug keyboard and mouse into, and remote into the phone. That would have the advantage of not needing the phone to be in the same room even, I could use it despite it charging by my bedside
