Looks like samsung might beat intel to 14nm. Sampling doesn't matter, volume does.
Interesting times.
People can shout all they want about Intel's 14nm density, but it doesn't account for much by itself and from what I've seen from the limited amount of Broadwell reviews, it's not terribly impressive. It seems to perform almost identically to Haswell on the CPU with a small GPU boost afforded by the die shrink. Sure, it's a tick so we'd expect to see more modest performance gains, and from what I've seen it looks to be mostly attributable to the increased clock speed, however power consumption looks almost identical to Haswell. From an outsider's perspective it just looks like Intel's 14nm has been shoved out of the door long before it's mass-production ready, for the political 'look at us we're first' reasons.

And the story seems to be roughly the same wherever you look so it's not like that one is a fluke. In the Yoga 3, people were quick to blame Lenovo for the Core M's disappointing performance, saying they'd set the TDP too low, however now you can see direct apples-to-apples comparisons of the 'U' models. And low power is where Broadwell was supposed to shine.
