Re: Intel to split the Atom into x3, x5 and x7 processor families

Just what the Atom needed was further artificial segmentation.

There's already some confusing segmentation of the Atom going on, the Bay Trail-T, Merrifield and Moorefield parts are already branded Atom. However the Bay-Trail D and M are branded as Celeron and Pentium along with the big cores.

It's going to create a heck of a headache if they segment it further, at least now with the Atom parts they don't really have any major features fused off like Celeron/Pentium do.

One way it could make sense without further fusing is branding by core count (maybe on the GPU side too). If you look at the part numbers that already kinda happens, Z37xx is BT, Z35xx is Moorefield, Z34xx is Merrifield, even though Moorefield seems all-around faster than BT especially its PowerVR GPU over BT's IVB one. However Intel is supposed to be (again) condensing it down at 14nm to just have the two dies, a dual and quad both with Broadwell-architecture IGP.

    I guess they've got to fight the Cortex A53 / A57 / A72 quad/octo core stuff somehow.

A53, A57 and A72 are actually different cores though.

Actually selling something different rather than just bits fused off for marketing purposes? The dastardly fiends!

Seriously though, I really want an A72. A quad A57 in an ITX board would do, but the A72 looks super.

Not sure if it's legit, but Cherry Trail has popped up on Geekbench: https://www.semiwiki.com/forum/f296/...ench-5597.html

Seems about right for a Tick.

I notice a similar leak result has popped up for a new MediaTek A57 soc

    http://www.fudzilla.com/news/process...d-in-geekbench

So single thread not quite up to that Cherry Trail value. Still, if A72 is 1.8 times faster than A57, then Intel have to up their game for their next release.

Yay more intel 'marketing' to help make things easier, sorry I mean confusing, to understand for customers.

And where does the 'pentium' branded atom fit in? I was under the impression that the current pentiums were the better performing atom cpu's....

Seriously, intel doesn't have a clue as usual and it's only going to get worse with the next batch of desktop cpu's.

That's actually a fairly low score for A57, the Note 4 Exynos does >1200 ST despite operating in AArch32: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/1985264

And Krait 400 is also close to 1000: http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/1985120

I'm not sure exactly how the Bay Trail Celerons/Pentiums are divided. Looking at the Wikipedia tables it looks like SSE4.x are disabled on the Celerons but not the Pentiums, and the Pentiums are clocked/boosted slightly higher than their Celeron counterparts. There are also dual-core Celerons while the Pentiums are quad only.

However compared to the Atoms they both have bits disabled like the crypto instructions and in the earlier versions Quicksync but IIRC the newer ones have that re-enabled.

Maybe this new naming convention might encourage big brands to manufacture more Atom based products as they're easier to sell at different price ranges which may make it easier for consumers to understand what's what, ergo, selling more units.

I don't think strange brand segmentation really bothers manufacturers all that much; they're not as easy to confuse with marketing rubbish as consumers.

I understand that. I may not have worded that as efficiently as i could have. I mean that manufacturers may see it as an opportunity to more ranges and different price points that are easy to understand for a consumer which would lead to more confident buyers and therefore selling more units. I don't really have a clue how major manufacturers work, it's just a thought.

Hmm I dont think it will lead to more confident buyers! It will confuse most rather than make them more confident.

MediaTek chips do tend to be rather cheap though, so the performance seemed on par.

I think manufacturers want their own branding and price differentiation, and can't imagine they want to give that up to Intel or even just let it get confused by Intel.

For example, if you buy a phone from Motorola you get a basic choice of E, G or X. There are variants but they are obvious features like 4G enabled or dual sim, not confusing things like whether some instructions are disabled where you aren't sure which apps if any will be slower because of it.

So basically I think the world needs Atom sub-branding like a moose needs a hatstand, but Intel with their 3% market share in the biggest computing market must hate the fact that they just don't matter there and want to make some noise.
