It's been 'next year' for the last few years from AMD, as much as I like AMD they've been dragging their heels far too much of late and I'd say 40% over current gen would only just about match current intel offerings clock per clock.
Also I can see Intel just popping out a 10-12core 2011 and even adding a 6 core into the more mainstream versions without any major effort even if AMD did get something on par.
That they've 'announced' a foray back into the performance CPU market is a good thing.
That they've announced a release date a year or more in the future was stupid. What they've done is bought some time to figure out how to try to counter any consumer move Intel can make in the wake of the new E7 Xeons, and how that can be translated into even more horsepower on the the new Skylake architecture. It also translates into yet another cycle of Moore's law, which most engineers agree is still valid until at least 7nm... did they really want to hand that advantage over to the company that's NOT losing money hand over fist, quarter after quarter?
And with all due respect to Mr. Keller, but the K8 was over 12 years ago, and mobile processors don't a legend maintain.
AMD can't even get their RAID to work with Samsung 850 ssds. So i have no faith in them to come back from all their other disappointments. They should sell to Samsung and let Samsung fight it out with Intel, if they're intelligent. JMO
I'm thinking theres going to be a surprise along with the 40%there not going to give everything away. it's going to be 14nm skipping a stage .am also thinking power v heat is going to be low ..
well it has to be as unless they do something spectacular .. there not going to be around much longer ..
and I'll need to upgrade my pc next yr

40% over this old Piledriver FX8350 would be up with a modern i7. Really, that is about where they have to be, and given that an i7 isn't fast enough for me to want an upgrade it will still come down to price. My son will have outgrown his PhenomII by then.
So Now we have Back to the Great AMD Past -> Phenom III ZEN
ZEN 3700X, HeroVI | 32GB 3800MHz CL16 | RTX 3080 OC/UV | XFX 760 PSU | 10Bit 27" IIyama 1440p FS | 1TB NVMe Sammie, 2xSamie 850 512GB | SB-AE7+Audio-Technica ATH-AD1000X | DeathStalker, Roccat Nyth
Certainly I hope AMD become competitive again - I always had a soft spot for them since a bunch of CPU's I had over time, especially when Opteron's for desktop machines were doing well (loved mine at the time).
AMD kinda feels like that old dog whom you sort-of like having around, but mostly due to obligation and fond memories.

I hope so, I'm on my first Intel processor now and it's great :-) but my first family PC had AMD CPU, which was also good at the time. My last one was a bad AMD CPU, a phenomenon x3 8550. Couldn't over clock and it was stuck at 2.2ghz with three cores
X3-8550 is a seven-year old processor, heck it predates the one I'm using (which, btw, overclocks nicely).
Agree with this - Zen=i7 now then launching that next year is a case of too-little/too-late as far as I'm concerned. Unless - he says crossing his fingers - Zen manages to match an i7's TDP whilst still being AMD-cheaper. For Windows10 I'll be looking (hopefully) to retire my old PhenomII and at the moment there's little chance that a replacement won't have that "Intel Inside" sticker.
40% over the 8350 would be huge - that's a hugely underrated chip which competes well with all but the top of Intel's chips really, in multi-core stuff. Just hope Zen can keep that multi-thread goodness.
