S/A thinks that this is a different revision to 7850K which would mean there are some silicon or metal layer tweaks under the hood. That lends the question, when do you get one in for testing, and how far can you overclock the sucker

Oh, it's only in the i3 class? Not even i5?

That's what I was thinking. I clicked on the link, thinking, I haven't heard anything from AMD about CPUs for a while, I wonder if they have any good news.

Hopefully they'll have good news soon with something competitive in the high end. Intel have had such an easy ride over the last few years while AMD has been out of the high end market completely, a bit of competition would be a good thing! All these silly chips with graphics on board, tsk I don't know. Get yer acts together and make a fast CPU damn it!

It's pretty competitive considering it costs £40 less than the cheapest i5, but without any new chip designs there's little AMD can do to compete with the big intel chips

Having spoken to AMD they confirmed the 7870K is not a new stepping, just a speed bumped 7850K.

it was expected, just a filler CPU till zen is out.

I do really believe zen is amd's last change to stay afloat and win some market back, if they are as good as they promise and the price is as competitive as we are used to, I will give them my money for the next upgrade, until then I will stay at my phenom.

An FX8350 is quite a cheap and yet fairly large upgrade for you, yet you haven't got one: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/146?vs=697

Just how good is Zen going to have to be to make you part with enough cash for cpu, motherboard and ram all in one hit?

Re: AMD releases "Godavari" A10-7870K Unlocked APU

yeah, so far I'm really satisfied from the performance of the phenom x6 and I feel a bottleneck only with programs that refuse to use more than one cores to work, so I will not see that big of performance boost. For example I work mostly with adobe suite and the real work doesn't have much in common with the benchmarks.
But there are a lot of times when I have to wait for one core to do something, so I will wait for amd to get back in 4 strong cores or jump ship and go for and i5. But till then I will probably just get a SSD.

Also I'm sure a 8350 could skyrocket my games but I have less and less time for games and I will need a new GPU as well soon, so maybe it will be better to just wait to get a new system in a year or so, after all I will most likely need to change my RAM if I want to go beyond 8GB because it is cheaper to get a new 16GB dimm than to find 2 more 4GB hyperX beast to fill in. And now that I think of it, my WD caviar blacks are really old and probably I will need a couple of newer, faster and bigger HDDs as well.

Well... as I sometimes say PC upgradability is a myth, you will most likely keep only the case and the GPU after 5 years

I think my keyboard is the oldest component I have. Must be well over a decade old. I do manage to roll most upgrades in a fairly progressive way though.

Well, i've seen some vids on the tube that show the fx8350 on par of the 4690K ad likely 15% Less than an 4770k. Not that bad for the price it cost. And still amd cpu's are not well software optimized like intel ones...
