Yeah, I think that whining will continue until an 8GB version is released. Even then people will continue to go on about performance. In short, only way to stop whining is to release a card that's faster than the Titan X on all benchmarks and sell it for £200.

I don't think they mean whining about the R9 ranges performance... I think it's about the audible whine heard by reviewers, that AMD explained as an issue with the cooler master pump.

Nah, the audible whine heard by reviewers is their girlfriends/wives complaining they're spending way too much time with the hardware.

It won't. The interposer simply doesn't have room for 8x HBM 1 modules, and the interposer is already at the maximum reticule size*. 8GB will require HBM 2 (which has double the capacity per stack), but this will likely not arrive until whatever the successor to GCN1.2 is arrives. This is because Nvidia are targeting Pascal to use HBM 2 (skipping HBM 1 apart from internal prototyping) so AMD will need something more competitive than a Fiji/Tonga-with-a-differeny0momery-controller dieshrink.

    * Actually, it's already above the maximum reticule size:
The interposer measures 1011mm2, nearly twice the size of Fiji. Since Fiji and its HBM stacks need to fit on top of it, the interposer must be very large to do its job, and in the process it pushes its own limits. The actual interposer die is believed to exceed the reticle limit of the 65nm process AMD is using to have it built, and as a result the interposer is carefully constructed so that only the areas that need connectivity receive metal layers. This allows AMD to put down such a large interposer without actually needing a fab capable of reaching such a large reticle limit.
