oooohh! finally a mechanical drive killer.
Nice size. Just hope the EVO doesn't go slow on me like the 840 EVO did. Firmware hassles aren't a solution.
This is a nice step, now bring on the 4 & 8TB ssds.
Yeah, that's one thing I've never understood. Why are there no 3.5" SSD's? I mean just cram a little extra in there and you get a cheap-ish 8GB SSD...
Adding more flash chips would probably mean adding more channels to the flash controller. It isn't free, I don't think physical size has been much of an obstacle so far.
Or put it another way, I don't think there is any cheap way of making an 8TB SSD just due to the cost of the flash.
Ditto here. I'm waiting for some genius to come up with a 3.5" form factor unit that takes multiple mSATA or m.2 drives and then RAID's them.
Is someone going to yell at me if I admit that my first thought at reading the headline was "oh goody, now we can lose twice as much data when the SSD fails"?
not at those prices.... you can get five 4tb drives plus a cheap raid card for the price of one 2TB SSD. Yes I know you need a pcie slot but that price for the 2TB ssd is just stupid, the 'profit' mark up on that must be massive.
you mean something like this, pretty sure I've seen a mSata version somewhere too, not sure how the performance would actually hold up due to just a single sata output though.
Not me, I had similar thoughts hence my comparison to a raid array lolIs someone going to yell at me if I admit that my first thought at reading the headline was "oh goody, now we can lose twice as much data when the SSD fails"?
edit: actually there's loads of 2x mSata/m2 to 2.5inch drive adapters on amazon too

They have cheap options out there, but you can also get pcie raid cards that support msata drives onboard to allow the extra bandwidth

£637 for a 2tb EVO and you say prices are in free fall !! anyway this is great news (apart from price) as I've been patiently waiting for an ssd with more than 1.5tb for a couple years now. Any indications of availability yet ?
I saw these drives listed on the website of a local dealer last week (more or less the Danish equivalent of SCAN). Was actually about to create a forum thread on them, but thought it was probably common knowledge by then. I guess, I was wrong...
Have you ever seen how small the PCB of even a 1 TB SSD is? You could probably easily fit the necessary chips for a 4 TB or perhaps even an 8 TB drive in the space of a 2.5" drive.
£750, that's almost half my entire rig. If only I was that rich.
As I stated over on the 4k gaming thread - looks neat, but not nearly neat enough to warrant the price of a house payment, or 2 car payments...
