Panda AV
I was a long time AVG user until they flooded the thing with ads.
Defender or Security Essentials, where applicable, and MBAM, and common sense.
Most packages out there, free or otherwise, are full of bloat and feature creep, and slowly but surely, the companies are being revealed to be something slightly less 'wholesome' than they advertise. AVG selling user info, no matter how basic.... Kapersky getting caught spiking results of their competitors.... and now it's been revealed that some of the packages actually make your system MORE vulnerable, rather than less? Thank you, but no.

Windows Defender is doing a good enough job for me at the moment. I've not been convinced for the last couple of years that the free AV options offer anything better and importantly Defender is extremely non-intrusive and gets updated with all the other Windows updates.
On my main machine, it's ClamAV (to pick up those nasty Windows viruses), (main box runs Linux)
On the gaming machine it's McAfee - mainly because I got a good deal, but also because I'm too lazy to look at other solutions. Figuring that, these days, they're pretty all uniformly bloated and awful. Microsoft's "Defender" is the one I recommend to family and friends figuring that if Microsoft can't get their OS secured then there's no hope for it.
Variety of Kaspersky and NOD Smart Security on work/home systems.
Microsoft Security Essential and common sense. prevention is better than cure.
Windows Defender and common sense. It's all you need.
BitDefender Free with Malwarebytes Free.
Lightweight and non-intrusive it's only caught a few things as I'm pretty careful anyway but it often comes top/near the top of AV roundups.
Common sense only, here.
Haven't had a problem in over 10 years
I think one of the problems with the alternatives to MSE/Defender is they make such a show of doing stuff - asking to scan/update etc all the time and insisting on opening a resource heavy graphical interface to do so. It's not just for showing adverts, I think it's the 'airport security' effect too. The more inconvenience it causes the better it must be right?
Unfortunately many users take that to mean their computer is now immune, whatever they feel like doing to it. To use the Troy analogy, you can build walls as high as you like but if some muppet insists on opening the gates...
On Windows 10, I simply have Windows Defender for Realtime Protection while I use Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware for On-Demand Threat Scans. Although, I would have to argue that having common sense is the best way to avoid acquiring malicious files.
Comodo and Malwarebytes. For a while I have used Avira also with Malwarebytes. I love how I can control every little thing using Comodo. Yes, on my PC i'm a control freak
