Yep Surface4 and the 'Book are nice pieces of kit, albeit at Apple-sized prices. Slagging aside, I've got to wonder if MS "upping their game" is going to cause other h/w vendors like Lenovo, Dell and HP to try and be a bit more daring with their products. Being rude we seemed to have moved from ye olde beige boxes to black ones and that's about it.

The phones, Nokia had better cameras back in 2012, and in 2013, with the 1020 and although I see the point of not over speccing, it is just a big disappointment. Yes, maybe their able to squeeze out on par performance but it's been years and they just stand still. Continuum might be nice, but I want cameras on the edge performance wise, they had it, succumbed to Pureview branding second rate stuff, and dropped the ball. Style wise the bezels are huge, too.

my thoughts exactly, I can believe that after years of strangling with windows from 95 to vista, that company that in my eyes was the old dude in tech that missed the innovation train, have presented hardware that I want.

Man I remember watching that promo videos from apple and feel so inspired and now microsoft managed to get me inspired with theirs, if myself from today could somehow tell this to my past self in time there could be no way to believe it.
From wanting a mac to do exactly the same work I do with windows, now I want to stay and work in windows.

After Ballmer left MS is really turning around to get back in the game again and also I do believe that when you are no longer No1 you try harder to be No1 again.

Nice stuff but too late for me. I've got tons of paid Android apps (through the play store, humble bundle and amazon) and it would take a monumentally good deal for me to shift now. I only keep a windows PC in the house to play games on now. I do the odd letter using google docs (which I could do on the phone if I connected a keyboard) so I'm not even tied to MS office any more. Saying that they will continue to do well in the office space - I just think the consumer space (which less face it is mobiles) is going to almost impossible to crack now.

Surface book looks great, interested to see how much of a bottleneck the 4x CPU PCI-E lanes are to the GPU though.

This was true, I don't think it is any more. Really it wasn't that surprising there were problems in the old days; if you consider the variety of hardware and software configurations MS supported with Windows.

it is no longer true, especially if you get a branded machine like dell or lenovo.

On the other hand if you can build your custom PC you can probably troubleshot it too, like I do and after windows vista (which was terrible, but stable) I haven't seen a BSOD related to windows (the only BSOD I have seen was of faulty memory which I replaced) or other software.

While I do understand that is hard for people to believe that windows are at long last a stable, fast and good designed OS, this is the truth. I still have trauma from the years that I used windows 95, 98, 2000 and xp (no I was not completely insane to install millennium) and the tragic resources mismanagement of windows vista (or as we joked with friends (s)vista which means "delete them" in Greek) but after windows 7 I stopped believing in MacOSX superiority (apple didn't helped much with shifting focus on the i-devices and the mobile os) and for the first time in my life I was able to work fast and reliable with windows.

Now listen, I hated windows with passion in the past, and I work with my mac too, I don't try to tell you what platform to use but I can't just don't recognize the unbelievable progress that microsoft have done with their OS that made in my eyes windows better than OSX or at least equal with their pros and cons.

Also I have heard a lot of buzzing for windows 10 and drivers, well guess what, this is not a fault in the OS side, it is a fault from your hardware manufacturer who doesn't provide good drivers.
This is something that can happen in every OS in the world, I got my mac to get the grey screen of death a lot of times because of faulty drivers of external devices and like this wasn't apple's fault, I can't see why in windows it is MS' fault.

@nitro912gr its funny you mention the drivers, I was thinking that most of the instability with windows that I've had over the years could be traced back to dodgy sound card drivers.

I currently have a macbook, I don't really see what the fuss is about with OSX, its just BSD with a few nice addons. Finder is a pile of crap though, I end up in the terminal just to avoid it.

I think if the new Microsoft hardware is as good as my mid 2014 macbook then it will be a very tempting purchase for many people looking for a premium device.

well I did have my share of problems with drivers but back in xp it was the system's fault to not be able to keep the crash to the driver like it does now, but I remember a lot of crashes, slowdowns and BSOD that had nothing to do with drivers or at least not directly.
That was the main problem with the old windows, in hiccup an the whole system crashed.
