Re: HTC Vive pre-orders open on 29th February

I thought the Rift was $600 excluding taxes, and £500 including taxes - is that not correct?

I presume we've got no word on Vive pricing yet, or is someone prepared to take a punt?

I've decided to skip this generation. Going to let the tech mature for a couple more generations.

I've decided to forget about vr for a while and just get a nice large 4k free sync monitor.

Agreed. Love to try it but with a GPUcapable of VR being £300+ and £500 for the headset - I just can't afford it. In a year or two a card that can do it will be half the price and the headsets should start to drop in price. I might well take a punt then.

Re: HTC Vive pre-orders open on 29th February

I can confirm the £500 is included tax, its actually a fair conversion $600 + VAT is more or less £500.

I am staying oculus myself, it seems all hands on reviews are giving oculus the image quality crown (not massive difference but better).

It has been shown oculus can do full room tracking too but which is the main vive selling point but to be honest I am not interested in either on that front.

Firstly I don't have the space and I am not going to permission off the wife to re-arrange our living room, even if I did to then tell her she has to follow me around making sure I don't grot myself with the wire. Come on I only just got the £500 price past her on the condition it stays in my man cave and I keep quiet, but I am sure she will find the occasional scream while playing alien isolation entertaining.

Of course with the room tracking on either, say I want to work 20 meters in the virtual work I will have to walk 4 meters stop, do a 180, walk 4 meters stop, do a 180 etc, so I assume I will have to press something so it knows I am not turning around in the game world, talk about immesion breaking. I suppose the idea is much like how great the Wii was at first but we soon realised we actually wanted to sit down and press buttons rather waving our arms about to control things.

The other reason is the oculus will of course work with oculus software and steam VR, where the vive only supports steam VR.

As for the bundled xbox one controller I do believe the have cut a deal with microsoft and cost is marginal so I am quite happy to have it in the box (I planned to buy one eventually anyway).

I do have doubts vive will be cheaper as I can the technology costing slightly more unless they exclude audio, and of course I don't think HTC are in a position to make a loss on each unit to make it cheaper.

Everybody is free to make there own choices here but I have certainly put a lot of thought in to make my decision.

£529 I paid for my Oculus CV1... dont see where the taxes part comes from as its already included in that price.

Nope, prepare to be very very disappointed, the xbox one controller costs <$10 to bundle in and Oculus are selling at cost whereas HTC (not Valve) has to sell it at a profit (due to their dire circumstance!) .
Dont be surprised if this appears near the $1000 mark.

Another thing is the fact this wont launch on time, its highly unlikely they will meet this new deadline as they havent begun manufacturing and they said the new dev kit (which they released a week before CES) is for improving the CV1 so the fact they are only a few months away from launch and still looking to make changes means they cant enter full manufacturing yet, to put that in perspective Oculus have been tweaking their manufacture runs since September and still didnt have enough stock!

Lucky thereis a 29th this year

Re: HTC Vive pre-orders open on 29th February

None of them are ready. It's been said for a while that you need 4k MINIMUM to stop sickness/blurriness and that VR would surely benefit from 8k quite easily.

Yet all are releasing around 1080p.

I hope they all include a lifetimes supply of sickbags.

I guess that's the cost of being able to ship 1,000,000 units instead of 10,000. Bring the hardware spec down to something that is affordable, regardless of whether that's what the tech requires.

You can see the same philosophy from Sony.....releasing a VR headset for PS4? Seriously? Is it going to run PS3 graphics levels to maintain a decent framerate?

So, I for one will be exluding myself from this until they can sell me something fit for purpose.

That's not exactly true. Higher resolution on these means that it is more realistic and more immersive, the sickness tends to come from either misaligned lenses, headset too heavy, overpowering stereo parallax, (in the case of these tracked headsets) laggy latency for tracking head movements or that some people just can't handle stereoscopic displays.
Far as what i've read is that the oculus has pretty good latency on it and you can adjust the lenses so it should minimise sickness from it.

I was about to say the same, the resolution isn't what causes sickness, in most cases it was the delay between head movements and the screen which appears to have been fixed on both the vive and oculus.

The oculus pd adjustment does seem a good idea and the fact it moves the lenses and screens if great, it does appear many are saying when demoing they didn't have time to get the perfect setup as such it it just went on and worked great (I guess its a kind of average setup which makes sense.

I will say after messing with a friends dk2 the resolution wasn't an issue, I was sort of aware of it at first but then completely forgot about it and was simply in the game, I will say there was a slight screen door effect but yet again this is apparently much better on the vive and better again on the oculus, of course this is from reports I haven't tried the vive or cv1.

I can see why many are saying they will wait and that is fair enough but for me the DK2 has been tempting me for ages and the CV1 has pushed me over the edged.

Re: HTC Vive pre-orders open on 29th February

I have also seen reports from tech journalists stating vendors are putting an embargo on mentioning "sickness" in any previews....

Makes me think it has not been solved.

I have also seen others stating sickness is due to the "reality" part and not the "virtual" part.....go figure.

I guess we don't have long to wait to see the percentage of people who are having to buy travel sickness pills to play games.

You wont be able to play quake without motion sickness, impossible to avoid however for the most part motion sickness has been resolved and the CV1 is vastly superior to the DK2 in every way (apart from price obviously! ). Resolution higher, a diffuser panel along with 2 separate screens and the screens themselves have had the pixel fill increased which means less screendoor by a huge amount (if DK2 was noticeable but okay to you then it shouldnt be noticeable ).

Maybe HTC/Valve have put an embargo on this (unlikely) but I can say with certainty that Oculus have not done this so what you see reported is legit... No issues my friend
