Hopefully that will mean the end of the constant nagging on my HTPC to upgrade - which I would have done had windows 10 not dropped Windows media centre

Will it then stop bugging you to update, or even worse, still try to automatically update and then hold your computer to ransom if you don't pay? [/cynical]

I can't actually remember what exactly I did last year, but I haven't personally experienced the notifications. My step-dad called me last week saying his PC had started to download the upgrade. I didn't have the patience to go through uninstalling updates with him over the phone, so just said to roll with it...

Have you tried GWX Control Panel?

I thought that adding WMC back into Windows had been resolved via various methods?

And I would expect it to break every time Microsoft release a new build.....and at some point break for good.

Personally I moved across to a 3rd party solution, as much as I loved WMC it had a few drawbacks and since moving wholesale away from it, I am happier on-the-whole. Hell, I can even have my refresh rate match the content now

Re: Windows 10 free upgrades offer "to end soon"

Would have been nice to be able to just upgrade my license key from 7 Pro to 10 Pro without having to install. I've got a couple of 7 licenses that I have plans for, but don't want to rocket through 2-3 new builds before the end of July just to get win 10 on them.

Agree I've got a couple of windows 7 licenses I could convert for later as although I intend to build some more machines it likely won't be before July

Kalniel - As to using virtual machines, not sure if that would work due to the way the OS registers to the hardware config.

It might not work seamlessly, but support confirmed to me that I could later change hardware after upgrading to windows 10, since my window 7 license allowed it. May well be several other problems with using VMs though.

Yep, I have a Windows 8 licence I never deployed, was hoping to get an AM4 motherboard to use it on but AMD haven't pulled their finger out and released the damned platform yet. I think they are missing a trick there.

Isn't the Win 7 Home license forbidden to be used in a VM as well?

Re: Windows 10 free upgrades offer "to end soon"

If i were Microsoft i wouldn't be bragging about those stats on their announcement page, "Cortana has helped answer over 6 billion questions since launch" so on average that's 20 times people have asked Cortana a question per device since launch some 9 months ago, on average people used Edge for only three and a half hours in March, and they've only played games for an average of 30 hours since Windows 10 launched.

Or are my maths skills letting me down.

yea, $120 for a copy of W10 is too steep for someone who has a second hand core2duo desktop, they should offer a free version of Windows 10 which is cloged with adds whereby the background wallpaper is locked and shows different adds every 5 minutes. (Windows 7 starter edition used to have a locked wallpaper picture showning the windows 7 logo)

Actually the log in 'wallpaper' could be a better location for adverts as you'd have to see them every time you login. To be fair if they're going to be data mining user data then the os shouldn't really be charged for.

Corky, your sums seem ok to me and I've used firefox for more than 3.5 hours today already lol.
