Netflix launches fast.com internet connection speed tool

It's a very simple, ad-free, connection speed checker, using Netflix servers.

Re: Netflix launches fast.com internet connection speed tool

Hmmm, well it seems quicker than speedtest, for better or worse, though doesn't have a ping test like speedtest does. It's very much speed at a glance rather than plotting to a graph to monitor for spikes like speedtest does, but I can see it having a use.

That said, on my 250Mbps connection its rounding to the nearest 10. I guess when you're at a high speed like that you perhaps don't care about the 6Mbps over 240 or whatever, but I would like to see it regardless. Especially as at times it has said 250Mbps, when I've never seen a full 250 on speedtest.net, which suggests there may be some rounding going on at the higher numbers.

Re: Netflix launches fast.com internet connection speed tool

Looks good for a quick glance at the download speed.

For anything more than that, I've seen testmy.net mentioned as a better (and non-Flash) alternative to speedtest.net recently.

Dunno how accurate these things are tbh.

    Virgin service paid for 100mb

    Results
    Speedtest : 102mb
    Fast: 48
    testmy: 13

Won't go over 97Mbps on my 1Gbps connection, but does the job as far as Netflix streaming is concerned.

I think the idea of this is for netflix to show if your isp is throttling your netflix streams.

I guess Netflix have no interest in latency, for them that is what buffering is for.

For me it says 37Mbps for an advertised up to 40Mbps vdsl link.

A reliable test is downloading something over 1 gb using tools like jdownloader. Observe your speed there. That's the real one.

Re: Netflix launches fast.com internet connection speed tool

One thing this does do is absolutely prove without a shadow of a doubt that Virgin Media Ireland are limiting Netflix traffic.

    Should be 240Mbps

    Getting 240+Mbps on speedtest

Will go no higher than 80mbps on fast.com test from Netflix

People have been complaining here to Virgin Media for months on end, nothing changed.

Formally UPC, when Virgin Media took over they started to shape the traffic from Netflix and ruined the service for many customers.

Of course, Virgin Media Ireland have a competing service to Netflix, which streams perfectly at full speeds, surprise, surprise.

Re: Netflix launches fast.com internet connection speed tool

I'm getting 74MB d/l from all three sites, Speedtest, testmy and fast.com on BT infinity.

Thinkbroadband.com have a similar tool for monitoring your internet, in the tools section called Broadband Quality Monitor. Creates a nice graph and details spikes in latency, and packet loss.

    I use http://speedof.me/ for a non-flash HTML5 test. Pretty graphs too.

Re: Netflix launches fast.com internet connection speed tool

At 8.50 mine reports 10 Mbs, at 9.10, it reports 17 Mbps, closer to the 20 or so I got when we moved in.

At a guess, the fact we use Netflix for an average 8 hours a day instead of watching TV has pushed us into a traffic shaping policy
