Man....can Nvidia get their cards to perform well with Vulkan. Then there would be a bigger push for more devs to use it and bring around an all around win for us consumers.

The problem is that Nvidia cards are designed for old graphics APIs. AMD has been focused on modern close-to-metal APIs since GCN 1.0.

It sounds like one of the doom devs is porting the original Quake to Vulkan in his spare time. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?pag...ke-1-On-Vulkan

But I expect Vulkan will take off on Android if anywhere.

Interesting. I wonder how the Sapphire Nitro+ OS does in comparison at £40 cheaper and faster default OC... Is hexus getting one in to benchmark? Overclockers have started shipping today.

We have both the 4GB and 8GB Nitros on the test bench. Review coming on Friday.

    Hi there,

You're perhaps assuming that we're benchmarking the same scenes and for the same length of time with exactly the same quality settings. That doesn't happen. The closest apples-to-apples comparison you can have is with a purely synthetic benchmark that runs exactly the same load each time - 3DMark, for example.

We keep logs of all the results and what you see is what we got, not what we thought we might get.

Our benchmarks are consistent amongst themselves. If an RX 480 card comes into review that's clocked in, say, five per cent higher, it will always score higher than the slower card, though not five per cent in many cases. The Asus card is a case in point.

Re: Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 480 OC

To be honest at those prices I wouldn't buy either. I bought my Asus Strix GTX 970 for £250, with 2 free games worth £50 (which I sold on). Effectively making it £200, around 10 months ago. So I could buy an RX480 which is effectively the same performance for £290 now, or spend £325 for ~ 10% performance boost over my GTX970, albeit with more RAM on both accounts. Not interested to be honest.

These are all the same ASUS Strix brand so I'd say pricing comparisons are fair.

Only the RX 480 4Gb @ £180ish seems like any reasonable buy over my 10 month old GTX970 for anyone in the market for a new card, in my opinion.

Re: Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 480 OC

Probably should add in a comparison with a reference 1060 seeing as that's what the AIB RX 480s were supposed to compete with. I also wonder why ASUS is playing it safe with the OC on the 480s while they cut it very fine with their 1060s, most reviews I've seen show that the cards can barely go further than their OC mode clocks.

Too bad the AIB partners can't get anymore out of these chips, the overclocks are disappointing.

Please correct me where i am going wrong but Techpowerup are Running at and i quote "All games are set to their highest quality setting unless indicated otherwise".

    A. Why would you not run at max settings if playable frame rates
    B. Why if your running lower settings are they lower frame rates?
    C. Hardware is almost identical for rest of system

Tarinder already answered - how do you know techpowerup benched the exact same scene? The only same scene benchmarks are the 3dmark ones.

But the 970 came out 22 months ago, not 10. If you buy a year after release then you should get a better deal and/or bundled extras which you can sell on. At the moment these chips are brand new so are expected to be a bit pricier.

Re: Asus ROG Strix Radeon RX 480 OC

Beginning to think the cheapest 4GB non-reference card is going to be the best bet. 4GB Saphire Nitro+ is still pre-order on Overclockers and Scan, but at £200 it's a lot more palatable that the Asus card.

I did bid on a second R9 285 on Ebay yesterday as a cheeky upgrade, kind-of glad I didn't get it as I'd need a new PSU and motherboard at a minimum...
